Just been looking at Flory's website and his videos. I hope I'm not doing him a dis-service when I say that he generally does not bother with special primers but uses whatever paint he has a surplus of. Also he never seems to use gloves but handles the model with his hands before and while spraying.

Am I going over the top by using these things? Are hands not as greasy as I've been led to believe? Is primer an unecessary extravagance?

I'm a fairly new modeller and these things interest me.

Cheers

Aidan for acrylics I would always use primer on the major parts. Primer also shows up parts which are not obvious in bare plastic yet either have been missed or need more attention. You want the best you can get for your top coats of paint. Good primer has a good stickability better than the top coat.

Never ever used gloves that is a new one to me. Not had any problems not wearing gloves.

Flory is a a law unto himself. Works for him what he does.

I always use a primer, be it grey, black or white dependant on the colours of the top coat. I know what hes doing by wearing gloves, we all excrete a small amount of oil from our hands, the majority of times we all keep our hands clean enough so it dosent effect our builds. I sometimes tend to hold any model I am working on with kitchen roll, if its been painted just to stop any prints getting on the paint. I'm just been over cautious I guess :)

Cheap car primer and no gloves is the way I go I too have never had a problem

Wilko's primer and clean bare hand for me too, The only problem I have is when I forget to wash my hands or neglect to prime.

Tony.

I always use the Vallejo primer and clean hands....

Phil Flory does wear gloves when doing natural metal surfaces on aircraft with buffable paints though.
