Anyone seen anything of the new movie Flyboys?

We are running it on the ship at the moment and I have seen a few snippets of it. I am not sure about a black pilot in the first world war and everyone is talking with an American accent but the aircraft sequences are stunning. I might just go and watch it on the big screen to get the full effect and maybe the American accents and black pilot will make more sense!!

Definately well worth seeing.

its U571 in planes! REALLY bad if you ask me, the ariel footage is also rather dubious i thought condsidering what they could of done with the power of FX!

I watched the trailer for it online - thats enough for me!

The dialogue sounds like total cods...

"Together we found the strength to discover what we were made of - because when we risked it all - the sky is the limit..."

If you enjoy listening to cliche after cliche...

and the flying sequences look like something from an X-Box. As for historical accuracy....

Now as yet I have not seen this film,but from what has been said a few observations,black pilots during WW1,never,probably a case of political correctness again gone mad ? as regards the flying then they had built for the film some excellent Nieuport 17 replicas,which should have been ideal for the flying sequences over R.A.F Halton airfield,these replaced flimsy and dangerous taxying machines which were abandoned,provided the directors got the filming helicopter in the right place at the right time then again should have been no problems ? comparison must be made with previous WW1 epics,namely the 'Blue Max' which showed some very convincing aerial combat with excellent replica aircraft again.

As regards the cliche dialogue,this seems to be a thing with films these days for some reason ? why not tell it as it was,ie a bloody gore in the air where pilots with a mere handful of hours were sent into battle in frail aircraft.

I look forward to seeing the film and giving an honest appraisal,meanwhile these as I mentioned are my immediate observations,if they got it wrong then it was a missed opportunity.

One thing that irritates me about these films, the very first thing you see on screen are the words:

"Inspired by a true story"

If it's based on a real story thats all well and good but inspired means it bears no real resemblance to reality atall, and has lots of extra gratuitous made up scenes thrown in for good measure.

One thing that struck me as odd, is the way the aircraft seem to readily explode with enormous resultant fireballs showering spinning pieces of aircraft allover - like something from star wars.

Completely agreed. There was one about people in a raft or something, apparently after they hit the water, the true story ended but was advertised as "Based on a True Story"

Well Hollywood physics have always been different from the real world!! Look at a head on crash with a couple of cars, one always ends up in the air!!

Makes for good viewing though.

I guess at the end of the day you still can't beat the movies with a good story, a bit of realistic grit, loads of humour and very little money spent on the thing. My money goes on the obvious such as:

"The Full Monty"

"Brassed Off"

"Billy Elliot"

A bit biased I know as they are all based up north but that's where the sense of humour is anyway!!!

OK there's also:

"Chariots of Fire"

If you can come up with a classic, well written, popular comedy movie set in Essex I shall eat humble pie!
