I enjoyed Woodvale as usual, though for a Northern lad twas a bit warm.

Anyone here know something about that very nice three engine flying boat? That is one I would like to see at Loch Inch in September.

Funny colour of grass they have down there, a fawn shade, ours is the more normal green:grinball2:

Looks like the Short Scylla Bob.

Scylla was a landplane Barry, a variation of the Short "Kent" flyingboat. Bob have you a sideview of the Woodvale model ? I see Richard Crapp`s "Swordfish" in the background, is the tri-motor his I wonder. He is a keen waterplaner.

This is the sort of model Dr Jeremy Shaw used to fly ? he loved seaplanes and flying boats.

I like that three engine layout,we need to identify this one.

Been doing a bit of sluething, found the registration on the tri-motor G-EBVG , so go to it. Got a flying picture of it in www.southportreporter.com You better hurry as it is in "this weeks news" column and presumably gets changed weekly. For those that think the Woodvale Rally is only a model `plane show have a look. If the wife hates them this is the one you CAN take her and the kids to, plenty of interesting non plane things to keep them happy.

Seconds after posting the above on Woodvale I clicked on the address to make sure I`d typed it correctly the article was gone ! HOWEVER it has been replaced by one on a DH Fox Moth (G-ACEJ) landing on Southport beach for filming part of the BBC "Coast" series. The livery is SMT. A poignant touch about current owners.

G-EBVG Short S.8 Calcutta,was originally to have been used by the RNAS as N214,damaged beyond repair on 28-12-1936,thats the aircraft Duncan.

Yeah Duncan, I agree Woodvale is a show for just about all the family. Two types of "live steam locomotives" full size and models. Umpteen car make enthusiast groups, Motorbikes the same, lots of both with a great deal of decorating, paint, lights, sound at least one of which was loder than the Fairground. Morris dance competition, Merlin engines, military equipment enthusiasts, Kites by the hundred and the model boatbuilders. That only mentions a sample.

The guys with highly decorated loud machines were not youngsters, they were active wrinklies like us

Sounds like a versatile show,was that the chap with the Merlin strapped to a chassis,I bet that made a din ? I believe he has few Merlin engines of different marks.

there was 2 engines on trailers a merlin and another possibly a differant mk

they only ran the merlin though

was pretty noisey

One of the engines on a trailer shown in the newspaper was contra-rotating prop type, only saw front view so no idea what it was. Thanks for info on Short flying boat model, we`ll find out in the magazine report about it and the builder.

From a single engine the shaft goes into a gearbox which drives two outputs one inside the other, exactly the same as a clock hand arrangement. The differrence being that one rotates one way ond the other in the opposite direction. Each is connected to a propeller, one arranged behind the other so you end up with two concentric props rotating in opposite directions.

The big plus is that it does away with the massive torque reaction generated with a large heavy single prop but the downside is the losses in the gear box and the loss of reliability of the complex arrangement.

The most common that springs to my mind is the Fairey Gannet but I am sure Barry knows many more.

One of the engines I think is a griffon. A follow on I think, from the Merlin. It was perhaps used on the "newest" Spits or maybe the Sea Fury?

Contra-rotating. Two props on two shafts, one inside of and longer than the other, driven by the gearbox/s configured to rotate shafts clock wise, and anti-clock wise. Quite a few Aircraft use this type of prop drive.
