Thought I'd screen capture some research pics from various videos on you tube. Good thing about capturing video is you can pick up detail that is inconsequential. Tend to find that when people take pictures they do so with a specific item of interest to them. Video is much more fluid to get the images you want. 


1) rear detail is surprisingly scarce. So im going to file off the moulded straps.


2) under bonnet is black, i was going to paint silver


3) ferrari logo is painted in. Some seem to be painted in some not. Since some cars exist with it painted in im doing that also.


4) window opens in middle. Going to need to rework that. Sasho had a good thing going with packing plastic.


5) rear clippy things seem to be yellow.


6) interesting one this, the wheels have the counter weights on the outside. This has been covered with tape, but i might include this detail without tape and just pop in the weights.


7) gearknob looks dull, and lever shaft shiny. So will replicate.


8) nice internal view. Interestingly the gear lever gate is black around the outside. Will remeber this. Also notice the extra tubing, will try to replicate that.


9) seats are very bright blue. These look leather but i have also seen blue fabric ones. Unsure wether to go leather or blue fabric yet (flocking)


10) pit brake is black and chrome


11) there seems to be allot of handmade labels on these cars. So will see what can be done to replicate this.


12) exhaust pipe is sort of a dark grey with a bit of blemish. So will mix up a matt black with a small amount of white. And weather with a grey blemish.

As a bit of a heads up - the car in the vids is a restored one - not original.


First off - no GTO ever had silver lettering or stripes on the cam covers. They were all black.


Second - the interiors were all gold hammerite when they left the factory.
Some were repainted dull grey, many were black. Very few were silver as during racing, it was far too reflective, as was the gold.


The gear gate was also gold so many were repainted either grey, black or silver.


No GTO ever had leather seats.
They were either black rexine or blue corduroy. I'm pretty sure the seats in the pic aren't Ferrari seats.


Mind you, it gives some pretty good views of lots of areas of the car.


It depends if you want to model a GTO as it is 'now', or when it raced.

Some very interesting tips there Roy. Its a thought that needs careful attention. Since i have already started with the weathering on the chassis, the car its already significantly along in age so a factory new example when it was raced back in the day is not what i'm going for. I'm confident its going to be a 'current' working GTO being used at events like Goodwood revival and race meet days so engine and body is going to be looking well maintained polished and clean but functional. As for the seats, i can see now what you mean, i think i'm going to go with the blue corduroy seat, i am however steering towards a bare aluminum inside, i may add some black quilting along the transmission tunnel as some of the GTO's seem to have this in areas, with the shell exposed in places like the doors, sills and floor pan. How i am going to replicate the quilt? i have no idea.

Quilted innards?


Very thin sheet plastic, heat a metal ruler and press it into the plastic to get the pattern you want.
If the ruler is too hot, the plastic will melt.
If the ruler is 'very warm' - you'll get the effect you want.


Alternatively, give me some dimensions (quilt size etc) and I'll mould you a thin sheet in resin that should bend where you want with a drop of hot water.

Aluminium sprayed in. A light black wash and straps painted in. (I have ordered real fabric seatbelts) 


I was going to file off the plastic straps but i thought hey ill keep them anyway.

Some more progress today. More black washing, really needed the black wash to try and make the aluminium contrast more as it still looked to me like it was a painted lump of plastic. 


Did my first attempt at chrome paint, on the gear lever gate i think it turned out as good as anyone could expect for a 1st try. I also carefully painted the black rubber edging around the lever gate and filled gate with black acrylic.


Also did the brake discs, probably could do with some photo etch parts on the discs but overall im happy. Im really getting to grips with black washing and how it can enhance the model.


Popped back on with shell to see if effect hits the modelling g spot. And i have to say im pretty happy with the result. At first i thought I had overdone it but with the shell on it needs that extra emphasis to give the effect im after.

Just went to say that this is looking great. Found a message in the box from when I was away that didn't send lol. Love the effort to make the shifter gate look good. All paying off. How's the body coming along?
