At last! I managed to borrow my daughter's camera so I can start my GB!

Nothing too spectacular 'cos I've not done a diorama before - a scratch built crane jib on a photograph frame doesn't count!

I was looking through the 'net using just "Eastern front" as a topic and found this. It seemed nice and simple which I felt was right for me to start with.

I've put the pics up but I won't be using a lot of the things shown. You'll also notice the collection of modelling essentials - twigs from the garden, wall filler from the DIY shop and baking powder from the kitchen.

I'll try and do progress pics but it depends on when I can get a camera.

Gern

PS Just noticed I forgot to get pics of one of the boxes! I'll try and get one later today.

Very nice Dave, i like the idea mate. Good luck but i don't think you'll need it, i'm looking forward to this one.

Have fun, John

Dave, good to see you're off and running and I don't need to keep our secret a secret no more no 'ow!

Good luck with the build.

Nice one Dave, wonder where I have seen those refugee figures before ;-)

Nice one Dave - this is a really nice idea. And I do mean idea rather than putting together a kit - you have a particular scene in mind and all the elements make that scene. Excellent little dio in the making. Looking forward to your rendition of snow.

Best of luck with the build.

All the best

Just a few more pictures - mainly to test my new camera!

Another few classic modelling accessories!

Graham, I took your advice about checking the camera reviews on the 'net. I had to buy from Argos to use up the credit voucher they gave me, so I started going through the cameras they have, starting with the cheapest, until I came to one with some acceptable reviews.

I've ended up with the Pentax Optio E90 for £70 and I'm happy enough with the pictures I get.

Thanks to everyone who offered help.

Hi Dave

Nice telegraph pole. What did you make it from?

ps. The pics look absolutely fine!

Cheers

Paul

Sorry Dave, just realised the telegraph pole probably came out of the cart kit!

Cheers

Yep! There's only that and the cart itself that I'll be using from the kit. I'm doing my own fencing and don't need a signpost or trough for water.

Thats thinking outside the box, totally different and simple looking but I bet it will be more in depth as it continues.

Great idea Dave.

Hi folks.

I need to pick your brains again. I've got some cheap 'Polyfilla' type plaster to make some contour details on my MDF base. Do I need to 'prime' the MDF with anything or can I just put the plaster straight on to it?

Hi Dave

Before you apply the Polyfilla seal the surface of the MDF with PVA glue that way it won't warp when it dries. That's what I did to the base of my dio before gluing the layers of foam board and adding the ground layers.

Nice composition in the dio by the way.

Cheers

hey dave. welcome to the build. i'm i right in thinking you are going to do a wee dio of the wooden crosses with the helmets on top, with the refugees and stuff in the background and snow covering the area (like the photo)? this is a great idea! and one i had myself for a wee dio some time. except i was wanting to do it with american g.i. helmets on rifles.

Hi Bobby,

You got it. I'm using the photo as my inspiration for a very simple dio.
