discussion Glueing painted parts

Don't know if I'm missing something, but I've been watching some really great builds and have watched as builders pre-paint the parts and then stick them together. Styrene glue in my experience dosen't work well through paint, so how do you do it, stick the parts together I mean.

Is it CA that is used, which I'm OK with for small parts, but because it can be brittle, I'm not sure about using it for larger/load bearing joints.

This may seem a simple one to some of the more experienced builders but I'm stumped.

I stick together small parts with C/A. Aerials, Undercart doors etc. after finishing the main part of the fuselage & wings. These are the last things to be stuck on the model as like you Tony C/A I have found very brittle.

If I stick major parts which are primed I scrape away any stray paint on the joint to ensure the styrene glue welds the two surfaces together.

Do not see how you could stick together two halves of as fuselage or wings after finishing painting as there is always work to be done to the joints after welding together.

I would not use any other glueing method for large weight bearing pieces as styrene (I think) is the only glue to weld bits together forming a joint nearly as strong as the plastic itself.

I very rarely glue pre-painted parts. If I do,I scrape the paint off the mating surfaces which almost invariably leads to a re-paint anyway!.

Thanks for the replies guys. The question was prompted after seeing John Huggins Munster car build and all the beautifully painted cockpits - Romans Ju 87 for a current example - where the whole of the part has been painted before assembly. I've been painting and scraping and just wondered if I they were doing it differently.
