discussion Greetings / Acrylic Paint Recommendation?

Hello! I signed up here because I thought the members would be able to offer me advice on choosing a paint. I do not create scale models but have used Testors Acrylics for many years to restore symbols on vintage My Little Pony Toys. I use them because they have an amazing ability to smooth themselves out as they dry, thus leaving no paint strokes visible, and are beautifully smooth to the touch. Standard craft acrlic paint like Apple Barrel dries with many paint brush strokes and has a dry, crusty feel.

Sadly, Testors discontinued their Acrylics in square bottles about a year ago. I noticed on their site that they've re-designed them and begun to reproduce their acrylic line, but in the meantime, the hobby shoppe I purchased from closed their doors.

I'm stuck! I can't seem to find anyplace online that sells them at a reasonable rate and have no stores nearby that carry them.

Can anyone suggest a replacement brand with similar properties? (Enamels are out of the question--must be acrylic.)

LadyJemima I bought acrylic paint from Rymers Stationary Stores for £1 (59ml) and I use an airbrush for my model submarine.

The paint is soluble in water and needs to thined down by 50%

I sugest you look in any good stationers.

The paint I got is in the Essentials range:sunglasse

I'd suggest Vallejo model colour paint-its water soluble, widely available & is the best acrylic that I've found for brushing by hand.

I notice that both of those brands are in the UK. I'm in the US. Is this a UK forum?

It is a UK-based forum but Vallejo is widely available in the States, in fact they started in NJ before moving to Spain! Google it & I'm sure that you'll find a store close to you.

Hi Lady Jemima,

Would also vouch for Vallejo however you could also use Gunze Sangyo acrylic paints within the US under the name of Mr. Color. Here's a US website as a starting point. Cheers.
