Just a quick heads up to anyone who uses Halfords grey primer from the rattle can . Its something I use a lot for the priming of my models and has always performed flawlessly - giving a smooth uniform finish ,hardwearing , great adhesion of subsequent colour coats etc BUT —- I got a new can the other day and noticed the can design has changed , and on using it seems the formulation has also changed .First thing I noticed was the colour is a lot lighter , also it smelt very strongly like an acetone type solvent and went on very wet . I panicked that it might start eating into the plastic ( the old acrylic formulation was perfectly benign ) so stopped spraying straight away .
I then got a part of a kit from the spares box and sprayed it on quite thickly to test if it would attack the plastic . It looked very thick and wet and when I scratched at it the surface of the plastic did look to have softened . The parts I didnt scratch dried back quite well and seemed to be very hardwearing but I’m not going to risk using it just in case . Why is it that whenever we have something thats perfect for the job they have to go and change it !
