discussion How do you take care of your models?

Just wondering how you keep your models in the state they were when you finished them, I've tried cleaning mine but they are never quite right, I don't have room for display cabinets but I want to keep them looking good (well at least my version of good )

Have to say this is a slowly building problem for me. However, not wanting to sound cruel but to be honest, once the kit is built, I have little or no interest in it. I have space for about four models in which there are now four. What happens when the next one is built is a bridge I have to come to. When I was a kid, the old airgun sorted them out but I don't have one now.

John if you have a 2 inch house painting brush with soft bristles handy, all i do is lightly brush the dust off them and it works a treat.

I'm banking on an 8 year old grandson scrounging them from his grumpygrandad, for bedroom decoration, when kits are finished.

I have a mate who won't build anything else as he has no more storage.

Get a little camera cleaner or electrics cleaner. It'll run off your compressor (some are battery powered) and will blow the dust off easily so you don't have to break things off

Carnt remember where I found them but you can buy compressed air in aerosols tins,they might be worth a try

Give em a blast of air from the airbrush to blow the dust of. Or, like Graham says, get rid (take some photos first!)

there's something very apt about the construct/destruct cycle. Can be a cleansing ritual to build something with love and care, then destroy it. Like a war. Eh?

My youngest grandson, now 12, was given a choice way back what to call me.....Grandad or Grumpy. No prizes for guessing which!!

Only because the 'Other Grandad' was already called Grandad, honest!

Storing models? I use empty 1ltr. ice cream tubs with the snap-on lids. Perfect for a 1/35 tank. O.K. you can't see the models but it keeps the dust off until you want to play with them.

For figures I use the smaller empty clear plastic Del. tubs with lids again, that you get salad and such like stuff in. The bonus is you can see what's in the tub without opening the lid!!

Hi Ron,

Is there a link between what we do and how we are seen by our grandkids? Are we grumpy 'cos we're modellers or modellers 'cos we're grumpy? Is it genetic do you think?

I'll make a (small) wager that I can predict summat else about us. If you did a poll of all the forum members, I'll bet that for those that own pets, the most popular pet will be cats!

PS I like the idea of lidded containers to keep your kits safe and dust free. I wonder if I can find one big enough for my 1/48 B 1?

I am in the fortunate position of having a cabinet with glass doors, which at the moment is for of junk, so I can sort that out, throw the junk and I get a new cabinet.

The one I have in the study only has room for one more so looks like Im in for a clear out soon.

Dust wise, I normally blow them clean with the airbrush.

Last thing I shot was with a twelve bore. There wasn't much left of it afterwards.

I have 8-10 on display. These I clean with a make up brush as they are not covered. In extremis I have been known to run them under a tap! The others are stored in the loft in those sealable plastic boxes I get from a shop up the road for a couple of quid. A few old ones have been given away to related small boys to suffer heaven knows what awful fate! I expect they met their demises whilst flying.
