discussion Humbrol Acrylic

Hello everybody. Just a query, I purchased a new airbrush and was trying it out using Humbrol acrylic. I thinned it with Ultraa thinner, but it seems to not want to work, if i thin it a lot i dont get a good result. Any help on this subject, and do you think Humbrol is good for airbrushing.

Mmmm, here we go again.... Sadly, not an easy question to answer as brands of paints are like Marmite, some love them some hate them. I personally have never got on with Humbrol Acrylic, unlike their superb enamel range, but I am sure someone will come along who uses them and be able to advise you

I thin mine(humbrol) with water on occasion but in the main I use vallejo model air shaken straight from the bottle.

Marmite indeed! Personally I am another who did not get on with Humbrol acrylic and as soon as I first tried out Vallejo Model Air I converted to them and threw away the Humbrols. Be warned though, it is necessary to get to know how to get the best out of a brand of paints and even then some colours do seem to behave differently.

I have also tried Humbrol acrylic and have been unable to get it to spray properly. I have tried all sorts of pressures and thinner/paint ratios and it still clogs the brush after a few seconds. I have given up on it and now only use it by normal paintbrush.

This is also my problem, thinned it different, different pressure and it still clogs, tried Revell aquacolor and it sprayed brilliantly, so maybe that is the way to go. Have not tried Tamiya in airbrush yet, has anybody used it by any chance?

I agree about Revell Aquacolor, I think they are very good, both for hand-painting as well as for airbrushing. They're not as convenient to use as Tamiya or Vallejo admittedly, and you may have to do some mixing, but they're worth having. I'm not sure I'll use any of my Humbrol acrylics any more, I just don't think they're any good. I like their enamels though.

I like Tamiya and Revell Aqua great paints if totally different. Revell is quite thick and creamy but thins easily and airbrushed very well. Trouble with both Tamiya and Revell is the limited colour range compared to some. In fact Revell have some really weird colours that they appear to have developed just to mix with other colours to get the one you want. All part of the fun though

I like Revell Aqua, Tamiya Acrylics, Vallejo range and model air. All these paints go down well on plastics after a decent priming ( IMHO that is ) and I like them all


I tried a few Humbrol acrylic on a spitter ( 1/72 ) and I know I can't use bad language but the Spitfirs and the paints went in the bin. I was hoping that the humbrol said would be like the Revell Aqua range but it wasn't to be


This is of course my own opinion on the humbrol range. enamels were good and I used them all but the fumes got to me so I went to acrylics ( sorry humbrol)

Ive got some humbrol acrylic and i was going to air brush some but havent got to the kits i was going use them on yet.


I was told by a model shop owner that many of his customers add a drop of fairy washing up liquid and it airbrushes well.


Don't hold me to this but its worth a try for yourself

Fairy liquid was an old trick being added to mortar to stop it doing off, basically a retarder. Wouldn't use it with paint to be honest the Windsor and Newton flow improver works in a similar way I found, just stops it going off a little.
