Responding to an earlier post got me thinking about internet service.

Here in my city in southern California, we have three types of internet to choose from: AT&T UVerse (similar to DSL but "better;") Brighthouse cable; and various satellite services.

I currently have UVerse. It works ok, but the fastest speed I can get is 3 mbps download speed with ~37 kbps upload speed. It generally works pretty good, but 3 mbps is horrible if more than one person gets on the internet. I pay $40.00 US per month for this service. I have been trying to get AT&T to upgrade the service, but they won't do it. Techs that have visited my property say that with two techs and two hours or less of work, they could do some switches to improve my speed to somewhere in the 20+ mbps range.

Satellite is a no-go because I have heard horror stories galore about data caps, spotty service and outages.

Cable hasn't been an option thus far, but have a meeting with a cable rep today to see about getting that rectified. I am not sure what kind of speeds that are available from them yet.

It just blows me away that in 2015, I can only get 3 mbps from my current provider. Maybe I am just out of touch and expecting too much.

So, what kind of service do you folks from the UK get? Or any other country for that matter?

I am on Virgin, fibre optics and getting 21.63Mbps download speed and 1.92Mbps upload speed. Also in the UK, I pay £10 about $15.

Ooh! You'll hate this reply!

I pay £7.99 a month ( approximately $12) and get an average 35 mbps for download & 4 mbps upload.

It surprises me that you'd get such a poor service in California ...

We are with Talktalk, as Bt were utter rubbish.

When i lived in Oklahoma back in 1996-2006 i had Southwestern Bell as the telephone service for a while, but they reckoned they couldnt supply any internet service where i was, (i lived south of weatherford, out in the rural area)

I found a company in Carnegie OK who supplied telephone and broadband in one package, and was cheaper than SWbell anyway! And it was Cable. I too was advised not to use a satellite service because we were in the tornado band, dishes dont last long!!

Is there not a local company near that offer a service? I found local companies tended to give better customer service than the big conglomerates.

I use my tablet it use's 4g i don't know its speed but i can tether it to my lap top if i need to get more

What's that about 720 something Rubles, not knowing the pricing system in Russia the pounds sterling sounds cheap to us in the UK.

Sorry I have missed the point Patrick. ?

Internet speeds haven't been expressed in kilobytes per second since the days of dial-up modems Laurie!

My speed in mbytes per second in Weston Super Mare UK between 40-60mbps with upload at about 15mbps for which i pay with phone and rental about £45 a month with BT Unlimited 3 package

Thread owner
Cost for my service is £22:99 or if unlimited £29:00. (theses cost are for kilobytes per second ;) ) Seems BT are very expensive.

Just for you Patrick.

47.22mpbs

.94mpbs

Hope that help you understand. You just have to move the point a bit.
