Langy's Stolly..... Airfix 1/35 Alvis Stalwart

Looking good in NATO Green & black, finished mine in overall Deep Bronze Green.

Couldn't resist purchasing Inside the Armour set for this tho, mainly for the exhaust cover, the Airfix offering in the kit
had so many bad comments in other forums & reviews as well as all the things you have highlighted !!
Swim board, wing mirrors, mudflaps and hatches all better represented.

I have a spare set of ITA hatches if you require them as well as swim nozzles and one of each ariel bases - I used the Airfix
offering before I realised there were aftermarket replacements.

I've also bought the ITA external upgrade kit, just awaiting delivery, ended up buying it mainly due to the brush guards on the airfix kit being shocking, I did try to open them up but the result was garbage, they were way to 'messy' once completed and the exhaust cover is a total insult , it wouldn't have been so bad if Airfix had actually opened up the holes in it but once the paint was on it ends up looking more like a solid plate than a mesh cover, so into the bin they went and off to Hannants I went.

I'm sure if somebody had a spare bit of photoetch mesh kicking around they could cobble something together that would look reasonable, but I didn't.

I'm also trying to find a 'cold war'/ 1980's standing driver to possibly drop into the top hatch, but there doesn't seem to be anything suitable anywhere... this hobby is certainly lacking in 'standard' british military figures, most seem to be fully loaded with webbing and rifle etc, and not just normal combats.

Any chance you could post up a few images of yours ?

Will try and put some piccies in the completed builds at the weekend.

Figures - I purchased these from Hannants near the RAF Museum - with my dodgy single bristle
hairy stick - no one will notice !!

Figures

SMS - in stock.

Upgrade parts arrived this morning,

looking forward to fitting these bad boys, ... (also working out the possibilty of removing the airfix 'water nozzles' and replacing with the new versions without risking too much damage to the 'hull'.)

Just had a catch-up on this one, lovely stuff Chris,
The interior is stunning 👍
Thanks buddy,
it's been a pleasure to build so far, there's mainly just small niggles to deal with but nothing anybody would really struggle with... and we are our own worse critics when we strive for that bit higher level of 'realism' in a build.

looking forward to fitting these bad boys,
Careful with the exhaust cover and shovel, its very "brittle" plastic !! Don't ask me how I know
Ordered both sets including the mud flaps and rear mirrors, these I left until last - plastic is soooooo thin !!!!

But just the exhaust cover alone is 100 times better than the kit offering.

Completed the pioneer tools fitted in the rear, I've created retaining straps with 1mm strips of Tamiya tape, and finally fitted the cab.

Not much more to sort out before the final parts can be fitted and the weathering can begin.

Funny you should mention that, I've never been more nervous in my life than when I was removing those bits from the support struts, If i had one bit of feedback to ITA it would be to increase the size of the base plate a tad so the individual parts are spread out a bit more.

Whilst removing the exhaust cover a tiny bit of it did break off, but thats more down to how close it's mounted to the afore mentioned base plate, however it's in a place where I could either try to repair it with a strip of plasticard or leave it and pass it off as damage. but you are correct, it's a million times better than the Airfix version.

One of the aerial mounts did try to sacrifice itself to the carpet monster, but 15 mins of scouring the floor with a torch revealed its hiding place...(just how can tiny parts with hardly any weight to them fly off so far ?)

The brush guards for the headlights are stunning, well worth getting hold of, (also very delicate).

I also noticed that a couple of spots on the hatches and the rear of the water jets weren't fully cured and were a bit sticky, I might give them a blast with a UV torch to see if they'll harden up, but It's not that much of a problem as they were the 'early' hatches which I've got no plans to use, and I haven't decided yet if I'm gonna cut off the original water jets and replace them with the new ones yet..maybe it's a lot of work for what little you'll actually see of the resin bits.

Are you leaving the tailgate open ?? Would be a shame to hide that wood effect !!
(Should have done that with mine).

Its not the weight of thee plastic - its the "carpet monster" it can move and hide smaller plastic parts quicker !!
