discussion Lee Drennen’s Revell 1/48 UH-34 Helicopter

I’ve had this project started for almost 5 years I can never make up my mind if I wanted to put it on a flatbed trailer or a flat car or gondola I’ve made my mind up today. What better way to inter twine my most favorite Hobbies Model Railroading and Millitary Modeling. These will both be in separate forums so if you want to follow the Gondola rail car you will have to go to the Model Train section of this forum. There may be pics where they’re both combined on one or the other forum but no duplicate pics on either forum. I’ve actually never seen a picture of one of these helicopters being transported this way maybe they did maybe they didn’t I’m just doing this for my own enjoyment and fun I’m not trying to be accurate about this build at all but will be using detailed parts for a better look.

Always kind of liked these helicopters because they’re so unattractive

That boxtop is very misleading, though … I thought at first that it included the Mercury capsule.

Jakko. Yes it is a little. If you buy this kit I hope you enjoy filling seams and sanding and a lot of fit issues but with a lot of patients you can make a good looking subject out of this.

Well I’ve gotten to this point some fit issues and a lot of open seems to fix I ballooned some of them but some of them I didn’t want to take a chance to get lose the rivet detailing I figured it’s going to be setting in the car as a load and not the rockstar of the layout The car will be the main focus.

Lee, this is going to be an interesting build. I will follow along and see if I can learn a thing or two. Wish they made these in 1/87 scale for us "Mini Folks". LOL

Let me guess: it’s an old Revell USA kit? Those gave Revell Germany a bad name around here in the 80s. You seem to be doing a good job of making things fit, though.

Had me worried for a minute Mike .
You can use it to build up gaps , plenty on the Tube.
Well known to repairers of guitars for reseating the top bridge where it has become too deep.

Jakko. Thanks it’s been a real challenge the gaps between the windows and engine covers are massive but I think I got them

John. Thanks for the complement and stopping by. I see you have your Chef’s hat on can you kindly remove it so others can see just because I used baking powder does it mean this is a cooking class. lol

Chris. Thanks for the complement and stopping by yes I figured that out in the beginning what a nightmare kit this was this would never make a good shelf queen I’m glad it’s being used as a load

Pete. Thanks for the complement and stopping by. It sands quite easy but you have to use it Sparingly and build it up as you go filling the gap and it has a lot of strength to it when joining two parts together where there’s a deep gap try it

Morn Lee,

This is a great idea for a project and one you don't see very often. You are off to a great start on the old heli. If the seams start to get you down, you could always make a few tarps to cover it while being transported on the RR car. In real life, they did the same, especially over the canopy and fragile areas. Outta sight, Outta mind!!!!

I'll have to try that baking soda trick, I've got about 10 kilos of it, bought for soda blasting some 1:1 car parts, but my garage compressor wasn't man enough.

Allen. I think I have it beat into submission at this point. You mentioned putting a tarp over it funny this afternoon I just put some stuff over the windshield to act as a tarp to protect the front glass I’ll post pics later.

Pete. I think you won’t be disappointed just do light layers and build it up as you go

Interesting project. Nice start on the helicopter. I'm sure you'll sort out the fit issues. I've heard of using CA and talcum powder as a filler but not baking powder. Not tried it.
