I can`t stand shopping even if its shops I like and the staff are nice , I even get the right hump being behind a lady who takes for ever going through her purse getting the right money , why can`t they have the money ready to start with ? as for petrol stations the bloke in front of the queue always wants some special coffee which takes forever and then has to pay for his petrol and coffee with cash and a card again this gives me the right hump

Maybe its middle age and I`m becoming grumpy lol ,

This sort of customer service isn't limited to model shops, nothing more ignorant than standing at a counter while the people behind it finish telling each other what they did last night or what they are doing at the weekend, that sort of stuff should wait and they should put their customer first.
exactly the reason I posted this John. I thought as it was a model shop then it was somewhere we would all associate with.

customer service should always be first and foremost, nothing was more important than the customer when I ran any business.

I cant fault the large chain model shop in Merryhill, maybe its because I work in the centre as well in a well known fruit flavoured phone shop and they are always after deals, ,,,,anyway, its now common for them to pop in and tell me what they are reducing and keep a couple to one side for me.

That said the "hobbyshop" up the road are more interested in what clothes the staff are all wearing than actually knowing anything about the stock they carry !

Speaking for myself, when a customer comes in I will enage them, with either a nod, smile or hello, I do not think you can approach any customer in a parrot way fashion like we are trained to do, likewise whne dealing with upset customers, I meet them on there lvl and it seems to work, empathy still has a place in sales in my book.

I once bought a rattle can of primer from a local shop, we'll call it FordHals in complete silence. Not a single word spoken by the employee. Not even what the price was. I'm still awaiting an explanation from the CEO as to their customer service policy.

And it probably is middle age grumpiness, Richard but don't worry. You are most definitely not alone there!

this is the experience i get when i visit my local shop...i can only assume its because i look too cool to be in there..? Youre probably affected by the same problem mate...grow a beard and get some egg stuck in it..if you dont fit in, just pop down to my shop, they'll probably even put a new plaster on your glasses for you.
