When I first came across "lol" being a Laurie lol is a favourite shortening of Laurence.

Being of old age, but young in mind, I keep seeing lol splattered here there & most places.

I look on it as being another bit of lol but non the wiser.

Seemed that lol means a lot of things. The writer types in lol & sends it. He must know what lol means !

But does the receiver of lol ? Seems to me that it is left up to the receiver to decide what the sender meant by lol.

Does it mean I am giving you hell but not to worry ? It's only a joke ? Meant in fun ? Do not like it but no matter ? I am being rude ?

Is this a fair conclusion.

Laurie (lol)

Hi laurie, its text abbreviation for Laugh Out Loud!!!!! Quite how many people do laugh out loud everytime LOL is used I don't know. It winds me up when you hear someone use LOL when talking to you!!!!

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks Andrew which leads me to believe that it's use it rather "cheeky" or its meaning is stretched & rather wider than it's original purpose.

I will now laugh out loud every time I see it to see if it works !!!!!!!!!!!!

The youth of today, if you look at some forums, tend to use LOL at the end of each sentence ... they've been refered to as "annoying LOL-stops" by a few people.

It's the change of the English language i'm afraid ... for the worse in most cases ... the problem is i've actually used the bloody thing myself without realising untill i've posted and read it back.

Having taught English in my past ..... I feel i need to hang my head in shame :) :) :) lol.

So shall we move on with some of the others, make a dictionary for the over 50's...

ROFLWCCOMN is always a good place to start....LOL!

Strange, really, since, when I was a child, laughing at your own jokes was frowned on; even the use of an exclamation mark was put on the same level.

NUTS as Gen. McAuliffe stated. Probably the opposite to lol I suppose.

Interesting statement for an American.

I suspect that a British reply may have been more earthy say within the sporty regions.

Laurie lol

No I think when he said Nuts he meant just that. Nuts as in kegs, plums, crown jewels, or which ever other quaint term you use for your dangly bits....

I like that Colin.

No initials here but in the same vein.

Bought my wife a BM Allegro. It rapidly became known Internationally as the AGGRO. The most awful car I have ever driven. You may ask why buy it. Reply must have been the most stupid act of my life (well near).
