im needing to build a 1/72 diorama that is based on the battle of britain, now im wanting to do a crash site with a german aircraft.

does anyone know any sources for recorded crashes during the B of B?

ideally i would love a picture of a heinkel, crash landing on an RAF runway, so i can have a really busy dio! meening a crashed heinkel in the middle, crash landing, I.E. skidding on its fuselage accross the runway (grass), with the pilots being escorted off as POWs, and a few spits or hurricanes, probs hurricans being re-fueled and a bofors 40mm. just a really busy runway scene with a crashed heinkel in the middle.

are there any such sources, or ones similar! forced landing on british runways?

Well from one Ian to an Iain, I would just say go for it. If you want it to be historicly correct, you might need to find out if such an event ever took place. However, as a model maker, you have the freedom to do just as you wish. Im sure that if you have all the right aircraft, from the right period things will be just fine.

PS a google search on crashed WWII kent comes up with LOADS of 109's there was a Heinkel downed in scotland, not to any on and airbase though. Plenty in kent and Essex. just a case of finding them.

Been thinking about doing a crash dio same as you Iain. Got a second-hand He111-h22 in the stash which I may use but I have a few kits to finish first. Try googling for info and pics as I have found loads of downed He111.

tony, same idea as me, ive got a heinkel which i built a while ago, but the underside is pretty........wel lets say, not pretty, so by digging it into the ground i can hide the s**t paint job underneath!

can you give me some photo links, im not very good at using google for references

I can't think of any bombers that crash landed on airfields but so what,it may well have happened. If you've got to get down any open space will do and an airfield is perfect. I know one Ju87 (Stuka) made a forced landing on a golf course! One Hurricane pilot elected to land through a row of back gardens. That didn't go so well and his aircraft was completely destroyed. He walked away with minor injuries (he head butted the gunsight,a very common injury in this situation) which says a lot for the old Hurricane.

I think it's a great idea for a diorama, you can get plenty of interest packed into it.

An excellent book is 'Battle of Britain, Then and Now' published by After the Battle. Hundreds of shots of both RAF and Luftwaffe crash sites.

Not exactly BOB but I came accross a nice picture of a Ju88 of 3.KG/54 which crash landed on the fighter command airfield at Bradwell Bay in Essex. The crew thought that they had made it back to Holland!

The wreck,mainly intact,is being moved by an RAF crane.

Page 79 of "Ju88 Kampfgeshwader on the western front". I can scan it this evening if you like.
