Well Finished the tamiya M51 build.


I went for a well used and abused look with flaky paint by painting over maskall and peeling it off. Its not as defined now but i know its there.


May be over dusted and over worn but i think as overdone weathering goes its quite nice. Its not overly muddy because it would be used in the desert. I also added two other fuel cans on the back shelf as well as two fire extinguishers. It is an M4 after all...

I with you weeman. I think the weathering looks spot on excellent job. A wee query with your weathering, as with most models on this site. Is everyone on here self taught ? Trial and error method or are a few professional modellers? Since joining this site i have been left gobsmacked with the quality of detail on all models. Someday hopefully I will be half as good .

Well yeah i can only talk for myself but i'm self taught, of course there are lots of great people with hints and tips that help a lot but it is a case of trial and error and trying new things or new ways to get a result, for instance i knew how to get the rust look from another build but i wanted a flaky paint look, so i used a thin pinky red undercoat, put maskall over it and picked it off after one paint coat before continuing. I remember when i first joined someone told me about maskall so it really just comes down to how you want to use it.


As for weathering, yeah, there's a lot of products from waxy type markers to just pigment. Its really up to what you want the end result to look like and your confidence in using it as to how you go about doing it.


I done the M51 in the under construction subforum just to get hits or tips on how to improve as i was doing it. However i didn't get any but if someone ever looks at it wanting to see how to get a flaky paint look its there for others as well so if there's anything you want to do but don't know how, the best way would be to either comment on someone elses build or do a work in progress.

Thanks, Cant really see the flakes of paint now after its been washed and pigmented tho, I wonder if filing the plastic down to give it a slight indent would also be a good idea... It should at least give it more depth... if im doing another worn build ill try that, but iv still got a merkava and leopard 2A4 to do, both of which wont have the correct paint job but they will stand out as unique

Brilliant work! Love the wear and tear on the armour. Rust effect looks very realistic. You should be very proud of that one!

I did leave the mantle dust cover off the turret because those are easily ripped so a tank in this condition would never have one on. Just another way to make it seem old and used.
