discussion Making stencils?

After completing the GB and a Hunter F6 i'm making for my father i have two projects i want to build. One is already set out in my mind and the other is in the planning stage.

My question is how would i go about making stencils for the aircraft code letters and roundals? Would it be easy to make them out of Tamiya tape or is there another material? The aircraft is in 1/72 Airfix Halifax if that makes a difference.

I actually use just plan old 4a paper, If you can cut it small-ish, you won't have any problem with underspray, also using Spray Adhesive and then painting will work very well, that's what I use for my second hobby, stenciling.

For roundels and codes you've got several options. First would be "Frisket" film which is a low tack film made specifically for this purpose. You can also use plain paper. I don't use any glue,just cut the mask ,wet it and apply to the model. Remove any excess water before spraying. I just did the markings on my Me262 this way as I was worried about frisket (or anything else) lifting the Alclad. The final option would be to buy decals in the relevant scale and colour. Check Hannants out,assuming they are up and running again,as they definitely do sheets of the relevant letters and numbers etc.

I use frisket film for compound things. A strait edge can be masked rather well with "post-it" notes.
