Hi guys and girls I have been useing humbrol Matt coat enamel to finish my builds but I'm not entirely happy because of the smell and the fact it takes ages to cure what acrylic matts could I use for airbrushing over tamiya acrylics and or johnsons clear what do you use that is newbee friendly

I always use the Vallejo ones. It, simply, works....


Anyway I want to try the MIG one. Seems all the comments that I hear are positives

Can Vallejo be thinned with ipa I wonder not that it should need thinning

I only use Klear for canopies, tried Vallejo gloss and matt and contrary to the instructions it won't spray straight out of the bottle for me and needs a lot of thinning. So I have reverted back to Tamiya Flat clear for the dead flat finish, simples.

IPA is great for removing Vallejo Acrylic Model and Model Air Demon. Just use Vallejo thinners as that is what they use in the varnish itself as the motivator.


Make sure you give the airbrush a clean afterwards or it will gum up your airbrush. Use Vallejo cleaner as it is made for the job.


Except for a faulty batch not had any problems with any Vallejo products. I just cannot understand why others do. I wonder if it is they are being kept in low or high temperature ranges or both. Also to keep the top on tight to seal the small outlet on the nozzle.

I thin Vallejo matt varnish with tap water. You can't get cheaper than that.


I have once had a similar problem to Dave W above but put it down to an old bottle that I chucked.


I've used the Alclad matte clear cote or whatever it's called and liked it a lot, though I have to say it didn't give a completely dead flat finish for me. It still had a very slight sheen which I like.


If I ever get time to build another model I'll try it again.

I had the same trouble about 1/2 years ago. The white spots rather spoilt a 1/72 spitfire where the spots settled in indentations. I also had trouble with the wings of a 1/72 Lancaster and ended up picking many spots off with a needle. I sent the batch number to Vallejo but they said it was not faulty.


I believe that matte varnish is essentiaslly gloss varnish with a powder to dull it down and prevent a shiny skin forming. Perhaps the filler is white (talcum?) and it clumps into visible bits. I don't know what the answer is. Perhaps extremely vigorous shaking might help,with a rattler in the bottle (John sells ball bearings for that) .Dullcoat (I can't remember the maker's name) is often recommended.

Best way to mix is just to flip the top off and stir.


The best I have found is Vallejo Premium Acrylic Polyurethene. Absolutely clear and does not need shaking. They do gloss satin and matt. Plus it is more robust than the Vallejo acrylic Varnish.


Had the polyurethen about 3 years and it is still in the as new condition.

The Alclad product is the best Matt clear coat I have used.I have used it on at least 6 models now and it's given a perfect finish every time.It dries very quickly and gives a tough finish.I won't use anything else now.The only disadvantage is I need to use cellulose thinner to clean my airbrush after using it.But as I spray in a spray booth out in my garage it's not a problem for me.

Mine are kept in my garage where it's cold in winter and hot in summer.Ive suspected this might have something to do with it ,as apart from the Matt varnish all the other Vallejo paints are great when new.I still use Vallejo metallic colours for spraying undercarriages etc as I can put an enamel wash on afterwards without it affecting the paint.And I use Vallejo thinners.Ive found warm water good for cleaning out the airbrush afterwards.And the occasional clean with cellulose thinners shifts any type of paint.

Just to confirm the 51 and 52 above are satin and matt varnish. ie 3 types altogether.
