I'm new here so I don't know if this has been covered already, or it could be blastphemous, but has anybody seen the videos on Youtube by scale model medic? They really taught me a thing or two about weathering and painting, sadly just after I needed to learn them! A great resource for us newbies and he did lead me here in a roundabout way. Check it out. Sorry I'm taking over the forum, but I'm between models right now.:frown:

No i haven't seen it but i've just had a look on there and i'll be going back to have a good look. I do watch the japanese videos on you tube, can't understand what they say but i can understand what they are doing. Thanks for letting us know Tony.

Now you've put the link up & I realise I did see his colour modulation vids before (not that I entirely agree that's the correct interpretation of the technique!). The outtakes are very good-it's nice to see everyone has the same problems & that he's not afraid to laugh at himself! His vids on using oils inspired me to try that out on my T-34.

I know what your saying Patrick. His colour modulation does seem a bit OTT, like warhammer over-exageration. I have seen another technique of underpainting the joints and seams with a darker primer before applying top coat. Might try that first. Will check the other forum sections for tips.

Well the guy who first came up with it basically said to imagine that light is hitting the model from one direction & then paint accordingly so most would do lighter surfaces on upper sections, darkening as you get lower with raised detail being picked out with much lighter paint. When it's done right, it works really well. On his Pz III, it looks like different sections of the same bit (ie turret) have the 'front-to-back' fading which looks kinda mis-matched somehow.

Yeah pre-shading is always a good idea if you dont fancy post-shading, plus with careful use, you can pre-shade quite effectively using just a single-action airbrush.

No disrespect intended to Scale Model Medic, he's still a master craftsman!
