Hi All,

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a Mig-3 in 1/72 scale from either RPM or Maquette? I've bought the Emhar model already but there are lots of problems with it that I couldn't tell before building - I've just about given up with it. I'm not sure whether Maquette still exists or whether RPM still make this kit. Any pointers will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi david, theres quite a few dodgy old kits of the mig 3 in 1/72, i made the italeri one and its not brilliant , it just doesnt look right! I dont know where you might get a maquette kit from but the general opinion is that the hobyboss quick build kit is far better, and accurate too something none of the other kits available are! Heres a link to a great website with an overview of all the available 1/72 kits ,right at the bottom of the page is a link to the review of the hobby boss kit. Hope this helps, cheers tony MiG-3 1/72 kits

Thanks all - been away for the weekend hence the delay.

Andyrobs - I've not gone down the Ebay route yet - prefer to stick to actual or internet shops, but I might have to follow your advice soon, I think.

Yak face - yes, that's a really good/useful comparison site. I'd seen it a while ago that's why I was looking for RPM/Maquette, although, having googled around a bit (actually, a lot!) and I'm coming to the conclusion that neither of these kits are in production. I loved what the bloke did with those builds - I'm returning to modelling after ca 35 years, still a novice, and in awe of what the 'pros' do.

Plastickitbasher - thanks for your efforts! The Revell kit gets a bit of thumbs down as far as I can tell. I gather it's a re-packaging of the Italieri kit - see Yakface's post. if you're keen. The Hobbyboss kit has had good reviews elsewhere and looks like the most promising option although, for some strange reason, I do enjoy gluing bits of plastic together (Easy Models aren't my thing!) - and the wings and fuselage are single pieces here; the Altaya model looks nice but it's diecast, I'm afraid. The netmerchants site looks great, though - hadn't come across it before. Couldn't see what I'm after but I've bookmarked it all the same - I'm sure it'll come in handy.

So Hobbybos or Ebay, Ebay or Hobbyboss ....

Thanks again everyone.

david, you could always go for something a bit bigger- ICM and trumpeter both do a good mig 3 in 1/48 and trumpeter also do the 1/32 one ,I know thats a nice kit from personal experience. As for looking for a maquette kit, as you say i dont think theyre that easy to find and even harder to build!! ive done a couple (mig 9, la 176) and they were hard work and filler intensive! cheers tony

Thanks for the warning about Maquette,Tony, but, I fear it's too late....

Plastickitbasher's post prompted me to start googling for "rare models", etc which lead me to KitKrazy.com where there was an unidentified kit. The box had little writing on it, just "Plastic Air Kits", "1/72", "MIG-3" and "One Single Fighter". Anyway, I bit the bullet for £7. Now, I've just been on the MiG-3 1/72 kits page and, lo! and behold, the box art on the Kitkrazy kit is identical to the box shown there only with less writing but the same lettering style. So, maybe, I've just bought an RPM or Maquette. After the Airfix Gladiator and the Revell P51D flash and filler hold no fear for me!

As for 1/48, I don't know but I take your point about accuracy and buildability. At the moment, though, I prefer to keep to the same scale as my current kits.

Thanks again

Sorry for opening an old thread but I thought I just finish it off with a few photos after completing the Emhar sometime in September. The first couple of piccies show my attempts to reshape the forward fuselage as well as my first, primitive scratch building attempts on the rear cockpit/radio shelf.

After finishing it with Quickshine (with it looking really smooth) I decided to make it matt and bought some Revell matt varnish from a local shop - and it turned out even shinier - with brush strokes. Bah!

Anyway, I've also build the 'Plastic air Kits' anomaly and will post my build of it later under 'MiG-3 : UFO?'
