I have arthritis in both knees and the right knee is damaged after repeated severe locking which damaged the cartilage and tendons.  This means my mobility is limited.  I can walk, usually with a stick or crutches when out and about, but standing still or sauntering is a real problem.  Going around the supermarket is really uncomfortable with stoping and starting.

This means for the last few years, I have avoided such things as model shows, Truckfest, country and craft fairs etc simply because of the discomfort and pain which lasts for many hours afterwards. A few weeks ago we went to a nearby village show which had some really interesting things going on such as vintage and Classic cars.  It was so uncomfortable, I didn't take any pictures let alone interest in what was happening, I just looked out for somewhere to sit down.  It took two days to recover and I said that I would not go to anything like this again.

My better half kept asking me to get a mobility scooter to make events possible but I am not disabled and I thought that getting one would be giving in and I would feel a fraud.  But, I have been thinking.  Now I am getting used to not going to work and enjoying the time I have for modelling, I realised I was in danger of becoming housebound other than when out in the car (which I don't drive).

Today, I relented and agreed to go and have a look at one that packs easy into the car making trips out possible and would be OK to pop to local shops when I am having an off day.  And here it is.

I still feel a bit of a fraud but I can see the advantages of having it and am looking forward to giving it a good trial.

Ironicaly, now I have bought it, I cannot afford to go to any models shows......... But there will be next year

I reckon you'll learn to love that thing! As a fellow sufferer (knees and ankles) I know what it's like, and one of those will be on my horizon before too long!

Needs a bit of weathering tho... ;)

A disability is a disability Graham.

You certainly don't need to feel a fraud.

Personally I think buying the scooter is a good idea and now you'll be able to enjoy events with a lot less pain.

Just don't forget to charge it up :) .

Hi Graham, Don't feel a fraud, if you cannot get around you need assistance and the scooter looks a good bit of assistance. I have a below knee amputation and have just had a knee replacement on the other side and like you if I try to do too much I can suffer for the rest of the day.I think the scooter is a good idea for you especially if it means you can possibly get around some shows. Enjoy life.

I think that I understand where you're coming from Graham. If you suffer from an invisible ailment, there is an unfortunate tendency in our society to look at someone who seems ok & think " lazy bugger" as they whizz past on their mobility scooter.

But sod that if it's affecting your quality of life & preventing you from doing things that would you would enjoy?

Get out there & back to enjoying life ;)

Thanks guys, glad it's not just me that is double and triple posting!

I agree with Patrick...bugger them all....did I say that right? ^_^ ...I have Degenerative disc disease throughout my entire spine and also spinal arthrosis (arthritus) By doctors estimates I should have been in a wheelchair years ago but I'm still up and about, although I know I'm getting worse by the day. I absolutely refuse to take my pain meds on a regular basis and only take them when I am absolutely immobile and in great pain, which the Missus says is my own stubborn fault :$ .

I've often thought about a little scooter but until they make one that can traverse rough terrain and skid logs I'll remain on the hoof......Stubborn old goat that I am -_-  Even working at the modeling bench is an ordeal of late as it takes me about 2 minutes to stand erect after an hour or two work o.O  You're not alone my friend in your world of pain......Jim :|

my other half suffers the same and once we move and have somewhere to keep one she will have a scooter too

our local shopping centre has a mobility centre......about a year ago i finally persuaded her to go and have a go on on.....she was just the same, feeling a fraud and worried people would 'stare at her'  9_9 ...............she did the driving test and now we regulary go and hire one so she has some freedom

Don't worry about it. Not all disabilities are visible, and in the long run being mobile and getting out to do things you enjoy will benefit your well-being.

it is an odd thing you see lots of mobility scooters in the UK, but if I see one here in Brussels it is noteworthy. I have no idea why there is such a difference.

Why are all these posts doubled up? Nice wheels Graham, that should make your quality of life much easier. Nice colour, red must be the fastest version? No pin strips or flames though.

What they said Graham! I sincerely doubt that anyone here thinks you're any kind of fraud - as for the rest of the world - who cares what they think? I for one am pleased that you may be able to join us at the shows 'cos it would be good to meet up again.

I agree with John (Rixon) though. You seriously need a good camo paint job!

good luck with the new freedom Graham from a fellow sufferer , maybe the airbrush could come in handy  ;)
