I'm liking the sound of this idea.you clearly have things set out, but what kind of figures are you using for this diorama? if you aren't getting them, i would recommend italeri figures as they can be painted fairly easily and you can get a wide variety of similar armies.
I would suggest to keep in with the crossroads theme, use signposts on each of the four corners, preferably leading to places in France as it had a 'large' collection of crossroads. Maybe: Caen, Normandie, Paris and the Pas de Calais.
