My SdKfz 251 family

The family of these iconic vehicles welcomes a new member this morning upon the arrival of the Tamiya Ausf 'D', bottom left. I also have the photo etch for this one. Interesting to note the different size boxes between the old Tamiya 'C' bottom right.


The Zvezda one is interesting in that it has engine parts and semi working tracks. A review of the Zvezda kit starts off with 'if you are not aiming for accuracy, it's not a bad kit'. Apparently it is a mismash of a 'C' and a 'D'. The reviewer also said the indi link tracks are too wide...., exactly the same as the Tamiya rubber bands in my unscientific comparison. However, they will be thicker. Will I lose sleep over this? Not one minute.


The AFV Club 'D' UHU is by far the most complex kit in that the infrared lamp is a kit in itself and I have a resin upgrade/conversion set that adds the huge generator behind the drivers seats and adds even more detail to the lamp and the body.


Nice little family but I expect the patter of tiny tracks to keep coming for at least another three.

Hi who does the upgrade kit for the "uhu" as I have the same kit I currently have 4 251's would like to get at least 1 of every variant but might take a few years!

Nice haul Graham I like the 251 I have the Stuka fuss and the standard 251/1 in the stash , I have built a 251/1 and a 251/10 I also like the Demag 250/3


At the Yeovil show next month I'll be on the lookout for as many variants as I can find

I believe there were something in the order of 23 variants Alan.

I've been saving :D


I'll see what I can get then look into conversion kits for others I doubt I'd get every one even with conversion kits

Blast models in France do the upgrade set for the UHU Jim. I will add some picies of what is in it later. The generator is really all you need and is a simple scratch build, a bit like a small railway wagon with a rounded top :) . I think, with postage to the UK, it cost me about €32 so not cheap. It does have extras for the lamp though and replacement driver IR viewer.

This is gonna end up costing you a fortune by the time you are done Alan.

I was only looking to get the German variants mate lol


I will have £500 at least and although I don't intend to spent that on them I'm sure I can get a few :)

Nice selection of 251`s Graham, I have the uhu version and a few Stuka zu fuss, as well as 251/3, 251/10, 251/16, 251/17, 251/7, 251/21 as well as a good few sdkfz 250`s.


I'd Really like to get hold of an sdkfz 251/22 pakwagen and the sdkfz 251/ 17 with flak38, after looking at that list, I think I might have got carried away with collecting the sdkfz 251`s:rolleyes:

I love these 251s, the Tamiya version you have I converted into an ambulance, fantastic kits Graham.

Did you scratch the conversion Scott? I would like to do one. Read on a forum last night where someone said it was unlikely that the ambulance version ever existed as it would be too small and that they would use trucks rather than waste a half track????

All I did was scratch build some fold up beds out of wire and toilet tissue, from photos my dio of the falaise gap is on here feel free to take a look.

Just a quick query about the 251 family,were any models coated in zimmerate(sorry can't spell) ?.

I have never seen one done in it,but that,s not to say maybe ? ;)

Not as far as I know. The armour on these was quite thin and, being open topped, it would be easier to chuck a grenade in than try and attach a magnetic charge. So, no doubt I will be proved wrong, I would stick my neck out and say no.

I've never seen a picture of any German halftrack with zimmerit, so I'd agree with Graham.
