discussion Need some advice on scratch building a part!

Hey folks, hope you can help me out here.

One of my models which had been stored in the attic for the last few months suffered some damage in transition, two parts were broken off, i managed to recover one but the tail fin eludes me

I've contacted revell directly and they've ceased making this model so my only choice is to

A tear the attic apart and see if i can find the piece

B dump it!

C scratch build a new part

I'd hate to throw it out after all the work ive invested, however i've never scratch built anything before but quite willing to give it a go.

Would anyone be kind enough to give me some pointers?

the model in question is the 1/72 revell dassault breguet atlantic 1.

here is the last picture id taken... ive since completed the wings, added the fin and primed the whole lot. unfortunately the other tail is attached to the model already so id have to take measurements from that or the schematics (if theyre in scale that is!).

I a bit confused as to which bit you're missing. The Breguet only has one fin! Have you lost the rudder from the back of the fin or one of the horizontal stabilisers?

The fin would be difficult to build for an aircraft like that but a horizontal stabiliser or rudder should be do-able with some plastic card.

It's a bugger when that happens,it looks a nice model in your piccy.

sorry steve, i meant the horizontal stabilizer fin! i'm glad to hear that part wont be as hard to replace.. there are no moving elevators either.

ive been reading up on plasticard .. seems pretty straightforward.. i guess im gonna need some tools to scratch out the panel lines etc?

its a very nice kit from revell.. id happily recommend it if you can get your hands on one.

I have a special scriber for panel lines but I know people use other things. I've heard of using the back/front of a blade,razor saws and pins to name a few. I bet someone will be along with his or her method soon!

If it would make things easier for you to have the tail plane lose from the fuselage, you might be able to un-stick it by careful use of liquid poly. I have had to do it a couple of times after the carpet monster has eaten some parts and the rest of them are glued in place.
