I have just recieved a new book from Amazon called "Celebration of Flight" which is a collection of pictures, drawings and paintings of all kinds of aircraft by the famous artist Roy Cross.

A very high percentage of the artwork was used as box top art for Airfix kits so many are very recognisable.

A lovely book that I would recommend to anyone.

Richard,I have actually seen a few of those original artworks done for Airfix,Roy Cross had an exhibition of his work at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum many years ago,he created them mostly in a type of paint called Gouache,basically this is watercolour paint with white added to it to give extra body,his artwork is just superb without a blemish,his mastery of clouds is something that really makes up his paintings,and if you look carefully at his silver jet fighter finishes they are all made up from very pale shades of blue,a true master of paint,mood and effects.

It was identical to painting with oils without the long drying times.

...and cheaper on the schools budget!!

And by doing so you were pioneering the introduction of artists acrylic paints,these are made up in exactly the same way by suspending colour pigments in polyvinyl acetate solution.
