HI GUYS ive got a question for you all im tryin to motorise my radars on my rear mast on my tiger build but fitted the motor gearbox in my hanger bay an the hanger bay is like a sound box for it an its now noisey on my tiger build now ive treid mountin said motor gearbox on rubber a bit better but still noisey an apart from coverin it all in in lead sheetin which is too heavy anybody got any ideas to quitein it down ?
chris

Nylon gears should be quieter, So perhaps change the gearbox if it’s got metal gears. The only other hint I can give is to check the alignment of the gears isn’t too tight and that they are all in line, and to possibly enclose the gearbox In soundproof to minimise sound Generation.

lateral thought.
deck ... rubber ... small lump metal --- motor.

watched a video the other day on silencing 3d printers.
the metal lump ( it was a concrete slab in the video) gives a solid surface for the motion to vibrate
the rubber allows a bit of movement and dampens the noise/vibration.

Any chance of a picture Chris? Might be easier to visualise a solution that way......could you decouple the gearbox and motor, for example...or add a slower motor to a higher ratio box?

HI Tim thanks for your reply an ive opened up the gearbox as I thought the same as you as its only has two Philips screws holdin it togeather an had a look inside an yes its got Nylon gears but there was no grease in there so I put some thin grease in the gearbox not a lot just enough to grease the gearin an then reassembled it.
An I already fitted rubber servo mountins to the bottom of the unit an rubber gromits to the holding screws it was a bit better but I still a little noisey as I asked jen to have a listen as ive got hearing aids an I thought I may have the volume up to much so its bringin in a louder noise than it really is AN JEN SAID IT WAS BETTER AS SHE HAS GOOD EARS but its not good enough for me as if when the ship is fininshed it will be ok on the water as the sound wont be heard but my main worry is if when I put her in a model show there is always someone who says can you turn that off as its getting on my wick so that's the reason im askin you guys an ive only got a limiIMG_5273.JPGted space to work in anyway some pics of said unit here inside the hanger bay an to me the bay is actin like a sound box

an thanks Gary for your reply but I cant stick in a slab of concrete can I lol

NO TIM the motors ive got are all different sizes an the motor that's fitted in this gearbox has a special worm drive fitted to the motor shaft an getting anything eles to fit would be well uncalable but im just thinkin of what is good soundproofin apart from lead again Tim cheers for your reply

Chris. How about some kind of box made from thin plywood and lined with thin polystyrene sheeting? I did this to around the water pump in my motor home. It worked a treat.

I can't quite see the base properly, but have you put rubber washers between your thingy and the plywood base.

Ron

I was going to suggest something similar Ron.....another option is The old Hi-Fi trick of mounting the arrangement on blu tac and just use the screws to stop it falling off...to reduce noise transmission the motor and gearbox need to be decoupled from the deck, which is acting as a sounding board...it’s set up a bit like a speaker baffle at the moment....Lastly, for nylon gears vaseline is a really good lubricant....stays put better than oil.

HI Ron yes there are rubber servo mountin s fitted to the bottom of the motor base so i'll have a look an see if I can find any thin polystyrene sheeting? an i'll try an fit some around the unit but did your waterpump motor have a tendancy to get to hot as its covered in ? as that's my worry with this motor an I don't wanit to catch fire an thanks Ron for your input

WELL Tim blu tack no good an yes I put light grease into the gearbox an not oil

Hi Chris,

Could you line the inside of the "box" with foam, that should deaden some noise? A slightly more expensive option would be something like Dynamat.

HI Bob yes that's an idea many thanks but I think i'll try Rons idea of polystyrene sheeting? first as that's very light as rember I have to watch top wheight as this model has got to balance on the wet stuff but if that don't work then i'll try your foam idea but its getting a sheet thin enough about quarter of an inch thick so that's two ideas guys many thanks to you all but until I can find some im stuck

Over heating might be a problem for your application. My water pump is only on for enough time to fill a kettle!

Perhaps still worth a punt for the time it would take to trial the idea.

OK Ron an thanks for your in put as well an yes this motor will be running for hrs as that's what I thought about overheatin an I cant drill some coolin holes in as that will let the sound out only thing I can do is run it for short periods BUT CHEERS GUYS FOR YOUR THOUGHTS all best to you all
chris

Cooling holes may work Chris. You need to reduce vibration transmission and overall noise amplification rather than noise per se. Another cooling option is a PC fan pushing fresh air through the area. They are very quiet in operation.

THANKS Tim for that idea but I wont have enough room for a coolin fan an yes I know they come in a small size but i'll have a think about that as I havnt made the sound box up yet but my missus said that when I cover it in with the hanger roof an such it maybe ok an I hadn't thought of that I think at the moment im at that stage of cant see the tree for the woods sayin so time for tiffin
all best to you stay safe
