discussion Paint bleed under masking tape

I’ve recently been doing some work on my grandson’s model railway rolling stock. He wanted to change the livery on the coaches to a striped one.

I masked off the stripes in stages as I went through the 3 colours, using Tamiya masking tape after first washing the items carefully.

I primed with Halfords Grey primer (original formula not the more recent changed one) and airbrushed each colour in sequence using Tamiya Gloss Acrylics :Tamiya thinner 1:1.

I was disappointed on removing the masking that the Tamiya tape had allowed the colours to bleed onto the layer beneath. Trying to correct this using the same but fresh tape, and really firming it down along the relevant edges was unsuccessful- I could even see the spray going up underneath by capillary action while airbrushing.

it’s almost as if the Tamiya tape doesn’t bond well to Tamiya Gloss paint.

Any thoughts? Anything more reliable than Tamya tape?

To stop bleeding use humbrol clear..... Just brush it along the edge of the tape.... It will seal the edge

YES HI ive had trouble with tamyia tape not sealin down proper an causeing paint bleed but with a new reel ive found that as long as you seal down the edges properly then no probs an hi to you as im a new old member just back on site

Yep, can be a problem. I tend to put down a couple of very light coats before any wet coats which seems to mitigate the issue.

Another tip when masking for a second colour, such as a two-colour camouflage scheme, is after applying the masking tape and before spraying the second colour, spray along the edges of the tape with the first colour. That way, any bleed matches the first colour. I've not tried it myself but I know of people who do use that technique.
