ive got to paint some flight deck photo etch for hms daring in1.350 but dont want to clog the detail with paint. if i prime and paint with airbrush , im worried that ill lose that detail. any suggestions?

If you're using brass etched parts then use a acid etch primer, can be bought from a motor-factors-in 9 out of 10 cases even if primed the paint will lift and chip, even variations in heat and cold can cause the primer and paint to lift from the etching. If you do not have a airbrush then building up the layers with a rattle-can will work, just do not get too close and spray and leave then go back after 10 mins and do again, and again if you have to. Problem with brushing is, although a fine brush can be used, you may get brush lines and the paint may not sit right. By all means give it a try though.

Clean it with alcohol and don't touch it after.

Spray lightly with Alclad primer and build up a fine coat. Leave to dry AND cure.

Airbrush the deck colour on in thin mistcoats. The detail should survive. If not its oven cleaner and start again.

There are specialist solutions for treating brass to give it a matt surface with out affecting the surface detail. I have painted PE with just a primer and after using the etch solution and as of yet they both still have paint on.

Yep, clean well, or even primer will not take. I use my method as I sail RC boats so they get a bit more hammering
