Scale Model Shop

Pete's Vulcan

The underside will be white Chris, so no need to mask, but painting the u/c legs and cabling will be tricky.
I've been held up by waiting for thinners to be delivered but should be able to get some more done over the weekend.

OK, time for an update.
I've been trying to use the new style Humbrol acrylics for the first time, and it's taken a while to learn how much to thin it. I had a bit of a delay to do with thinners: I ordered some from a well-known supplier who was a little cheaper than our Scale Model Shop. The thinners arrived a couple of days later, the package sealed by Royal Mail in a plastic bag. The jar of thinners had only been packed in a thin padded envelope and was smashed and of course empty, so I checked their web site for a phone number but couldn't find one so I emailed them with photos of the broken bottle. I also over the next couple of days used their "contact us" form as well as leaving a message on their web site and their Facebook page. No response after a few days, and I found various online reviews that suggested my experience was typical, so I did what I should have done in the first place and ordered from John. However, later that day I had a Facebook message from the other shop asking me when I'd sent the email with photos. I told them the date and received another message saying very sorry and a replacement bottle of thinners would be with me the next morning. Sure enough, it was delivered the next day, well packed inside a box with paper wadding and accompanied by a freebie - a stand for Tamiya cement and extra thin bottles! The day after my shipment arrived from John, properly packed of course, so I now have 2 bottles of Humbrol thinners to play with.
Another delay was due to me putting the 40 grams of lead on the nose, glued in with PVA, but my PVA took a few days to dry so I've only got back to assembling the Vulcan today.
Here's the progress so far:

I should've explained the construction of the nose:P1180733.webp
as you can see from step 17 there's a 'false' nose cone that fits onto the cockpit front bulkhead, then forward fuselage halves fit onto that false nose and the cockpit. Very convenient place for some nose weight - Airfix recommend 40 g, but I put a little more in to make certain she isn't a tail-sitter. The was plenty of room in that false nose; I could have put over 60 g of used airgun pellets in there.
Fitting the outer parts C18 and C19 was a little tricky as they didn't want to meet until I'd sanded a bit off the false nose and also off the inside of the outer parts. When they eventually fitted together there was a slight misalignment forward of the cockpit that needs a bit of work on the seam.

I fitted the canopy to avoid filling the cockpit with dust, but I stupidly forgot there's a decal to go inside the roof above the pilots. I'm not too worried about that though as I don't think it would be visible anyway. The canopy (there may be a better term for the roof aver the cockpit) Fitted perfectly with a this smear of Gator's Grip to keep it in place, but both the pilots' seats interfered with it slightly, hence the number of elastic bands holding it in place. Cockpit masks were from ukscalemodeller.co.uk and fitted well.
