Hi guys, purchased for me by my lovely partner for Easter I will be building this...View attachment 296613
She wanted me to do one with shark teeth so will probably be done in this scheme, think this is one of the flying tigers which is also nice on the fuselage so please enjoy.
Cheers
Phil

I like a P40, and with a shark's mouth, great choice.

One of my favourite aeroplanes Phil. Looks great so far, looking forward to more.

I'm really tempted by the Airfix P40B, in RAF desert camo. It's supposed to be a great kit.

Yeah I see the airfix 40b not to long ago, as with some of the airfix models the panel lines just looked a bit to big for scale for me. I must say this kit is very nicely detailed, there is a bit of making good early on as the tail has to be glued on separately to the fuselage as is the back of the canopy which is a bit strange.

As mentioned, the tail to fuselage join isn't a great flush fit so some filling and sanding will need to be done as was needed on the rear of the canopy, a bit strange and a bit of a pain.View attachment 296819

A little more progress on this one. There was quite a bit of making good (filling/sanding ect) to be done around the guns which was a pain because the fit wasn't great and it was tricky the fill and sand in such a tight area but the wings tail and rudder are now on, primed and underside painted.View attachment 297022

That is how the 1/32 Hasegawa P 40 is tooled as well. Apparently that is meant to be a fantastic kit.
btw, nice job

Dark earth painted with post shading and dodging added, not that it shows up well and masked ready for dark green.

Just caught up Phil, one very nice looking pit, and great work with the rest so far.

Green on, I sprayed with 3-4 variations (light and dark) of each colours and built the tones up slowly and I'm really happy with how it's turned out.

Decided to mask up for the sharks mouth, white first...

Red done now for black, I'll be honest at 1/48 this type of masking isn't for the faint hearted and you need to take your time. Would definately be worth a shot at 1/32 and bigger.

So masking the teeth turned out ok, I decided to outline with a black pen which was messy, I just need a different type (something like a fine permenant felt).
Just need to outline the teeth.

Let me know your honest opinions on this one, does it look ok or should I have stuck to decal?

Firstly, nice job, I’ve seen that technique in the AK Aircraft FAQ book I have and frequently consult it for things similar to this.

My honest opinion is that it really depends on how good the decal is. I’ve done a sharks mouth once on an RAAF spittie and it looked fantastic with a decal, but the decal was cartograf. The question is this-was it worth the effort ie did it improve the look over the decal? If it did then it’s worth it. If it didn’t, in my own humble opinion it was a waste of time.
Edit-also, using a permanent marker definitely gives it a more inconsistent edge that is noticeable on close inspection
Cheers, John

It looks good Phil, but like John says did it make it look any better.

Thanks for that, I think I just didn't want the old decals to go wrong after the last build so I went with the mask effect and it is a bit of piece of mind I suppose. It's a learning curve I suppose at least, hope it will look ok in the final reveal.
Cheers guys

Looking very nice. The paint is great. The sharks mouth, that's a lot of work you've done there. I think I would have tried the decal first, if that failed, then paint. Who am I kidding, if the decal failed, if think I would try to find another decal. I don't have your patience.
