discussion Planning a Trip to Normandy - Ideas for must visit sites

I'm planning a trip to Normandy to see some of the military museums and coastal defences, battlefields, cemetery's etc. I've picked up a couple of guides but just wondered if any of the members on here knew of any particular locations of merit which should be included on any tour. I'm doing it the cheap way - car on the ferry and no organised tours planned atm.

Hi Alan,

Should be a good trip for you as it is one that I have done myself quite a few years ago, a good place to visit is Arromanches...the 6th June D-DAY is very well remembered there, there is a museum there and some of the original landing craft still out on display and of course the remains of the famous Mulberry Harbour still stands...there is quite a bit of it left.

You can actually see it on google earth too as well as many of the other war time features still remaining. If you turn on the featured content button you will get loads of blue dots, hover over any of those with your mouse to see what they are or just click on them, zoom in you will also see loads of little camera icons which will show you all the points of interest if you click on them. There is quite a bit to see along this stretch of the coast so it should keep you happy and provide plenty photo opportunities.

I second the suggestion of the Arromanches Museum. 10 years ago I did a half day tour out of Bayeaux in a minibus, price was very reasonable. We also went to Omaha Beach and cemetary, Pointe-du-Hoc and the last remaining German gun remaining in place at Longues-sur-Mer. There is another good Museum in Bayeaux but check the opening days as I was there on a Tuesday when it was closed.

Bayeaux Tapestry is worth a look too.
