Some of the things I have used.

Instant coffee jar lids. Some of them have some interesting shapes and forms. Paint well. Flip them over and fill with plaster if you want the weight..
I also have about 15 or so marble and granit bases from trophies. Some were mine but most found in a flea market. Unscrew the "trophy" and you have a nice solid and heavy base.
If you are by the coast a walk on the beach can turn up some good flat stones, I have a box of them varying in size from 3cm right up to 10 cm.
Failing that there are always the off cut bins in the local timber merchant/DIY store.
Oh I have even heard that you can buy bases! lol
 
Richard at Oakwood bases does some nice wooden ones.Steve Crisp of Darkstar miniatures does some nive bases in wood and resin.

Hi Steve - There are a wide selection of plinths available at Historex - type 'base' into the 'find' box.
