A quick question can pre shading be done by brush or does it have to be air brush

There are many that can do it with brushes, there are videos on you tube of how to do it.
I can only imagine that it is a lot harder than with a airbrush...

It's possible, it just depends on what effect you're looking for. Like a Luftwaffe mottle, without an airbrush it's going to be hard to replicate the feathered look.

I did see a chap do it with pastels. He primed the kit first, and then ran the pastel along the panel lines.
To seal it in, a coat of varnish was sprayed over with a rattle can.

Even with this method, you'd still have to subtly blend in the top coat - not easy with a hairy stick.

Or perhaps oil paints might work - they can be feathered & blended very well.

I found a fantastic method on YouTube, take a 4b pencil and draw on all your panel lines and what not then take a cotton bud and smudge the lines horizontal to the line back and forth to make a shading then apply thin layers of paint until your happy. Note make sure to prime before beginning pencil work.
