discussion Priming Photo Etch

looking at getting the photo etch for my revel U.S Medium Landing craft. I use Enamel paints. do I need to prime the photo etch before painting them. as I know you need to if using acrylic paints

The simple answer Russell is no. Enamel paint takes to metal as well as it does to plastic.

But...nothings always simple, is it? although I use enamels a lot, I nearly always prime pe first. The reason is that an extra coat does help the paint grip better & if in the course of building / handling the model, the paint gets rubbed away, the primer helps stop the shine of the brass glaring out.

You can prepare the PE for painting several ways. The easiest is a chemical bath that etches with a silky smooth matt surface that takes primer/paint very nicely.
An alternative is a burnishing pencil, I believe John sells them in the shop. Its a glass fibre pencil that puts very fine scratches into the brass. Much easier to control than a bit of 1000 grit wet and dry, which can also be used.
I always prime PE as I find the adhesion is better.
