discussion Problem kits section

Hi all after the probs I am having with my C17A and dubster mentioning his having the same problem with his zero kit, I wondered weather it would be a good idea to have a section on the forum for people to post if they had probs with a kit, that way people would be pre warned of what to expect from problem kits and maybe how to get round those probs or if the modeler could not get round it. Also (I don't know if this is possible, just musing)maybe that section could create some sort of list of known problem kits or if they are just one offs.

Although at first it sounds a good idea, is it not equally in its place to bring it up in the build thread if there are problems with a kit.

people that are thinking of building the same kit will follow abuild to se what its L

ike to build. If they have built one they might have a solution.

This was mentioned a while ago and after a bit of thought I can see the pro's and cons for both sides.

We have all had kits that have been dogs to put together. had we been able to read about the problems first from other modellers would probably not have got the kit. Or got it and been aware there were issues to do with it. Having an easy to find section specifically listing these kits with the problem areas in essence is a great idea.

As Ian says though build threads do generally flag up any specific problems and what was/is needed to remedy the problem. There are also review pages littered about the net for so many kits.

Another issue is that two people can build the same kit and find different problems, depending on how they've gone about the build. I've even built the same kit more than once and in avoiding one known problem have created another unforeseen one

This is not to say that there aren't some kits that do have problems with the fit, and all of them will all have the same problem (like the wing root weapons access hatches on a certain well known manufacturer's Fw 190) but there are many possibilities.

Being a complete pessimist how many are actually going to look and find out before buying.

My bet is most will buy and then finding the kit a bit horrible will look to find if it has been listed.

But being a complete optimistic why not try it. But also for members to be able to enquire in that section if anyone has built the kit they propose to build.

Rather like buying something on Amazon. You look at all the comments and there are some devastating 1star things and then find that the item is perfect. Much the same as restaurant comments not worth reading as you would never in the rest of your life eat out.

Steve made some very valid comments. I have built a couple of the Italeri Hurricanes with out any fit issues at any point but others have moaned about the appalling fit..7

If I am looking at buying a specific model, I always try to have a dig around on t'interweb to fine out if my hard earned build tokens are being wisely spent!

I'm not squirming to get out of it, (as it will be me that will have to set it up... ;-) ) but I still think that there is no real need for a special section for "duff kits" as if used to the full, all the info we need is in the forum already. And if not its out there on the interweb.

I am sure that if you cant find a thread or build on her, or a review on WWW. whatever.com, a quick question in either the general chat or one of the specific chat sections will give a handful of replies. Either with direct help/comments or a link to something usable.

My vote (if there was one) would be use the forum as it is.

I think asking if anyone else has built a kit is a sensible option. You will only ever get an opinion (or opinions) but at least honestly given I would hope. This would certainly high light any really bad fit issues for example.

As I say, no two people approach a kit the same. I rarely follow instructions as I find that forcing myself to plan several stages ahead actually reduces the chances of winding up with a couple of bits that won't fit properly. Someone else might slavishly follow the instructions (nothing wrong with that) but bump up against a completely different problem. Now, we are going to have two completely different views of the same kit, neither right, nor wrong...just different.

You have all convinced me yes there really is not much point to that section,as you say if the forum is used properly then you should get your answer. I think actually I just have a duff kit as others have built the Revell C17A and had no fit issues at all. I didn't buy thevkit and was not there when my missus bought it for me, maybe it was in the shop Window in full sun I don't know all I know it having checked the fuselage I can see that is warped too so expect probs there too. Oh well.

I have to agree there's no point in having a problem kit section I have built several kits that have been complete nightmares but others have built the kit and had less problems or they were very good kits as Steve Åland Ian point out the way we go about a kit can make all the difference to a build it's like the construction industry many builders are fine but some arrive on a horse and there from the John Wayne construction co you never know what your gonna get

Anyway building a pig and doing a good job is half the fun
