discussion Quick question - do you thin primer?

Hi, as per heading, when applying primer, do you thin it or just use as is?
NB: I'm brush painting, got some Ammo primer in a bottle.
I also have some spray can primer (Tamiya) obviously you can't thin that as its coming out of the spray can, so its more for the Ammo primer.

Depends how thick the primer is. Some enamels can be really thick particularly if they are old. You have to make the judgement call. The important thing is you wont ruin the primer by thinning it down if you use the correct thinner for the primer you are using. I thin all my primers down as I use a spray gun. The thing about modeling IMHO is that every time you apply a primer/paint you risk loosing some detail on the model. So for me always use the thinnest mix you can because through the process of building you will be applying various coates of primer, paint and varnish and you need to protect that detail.

Steve pretty much said it all. I've never brush painted primer but refreshed of where it's paint or primer, nice thin coats is the key..... And you can even use that approach with rattle can primer....start with a nice light mist coat and key that dry a bit and then gradually build up with light layers.
