Well, having gotten some nice pressies

(a bead breaker being very welcome though I'm sure most of you aren't bothered about that)

I received a Haynes Hurricane manual from a friend, V pleased and it'll join my Bf109 and Spitfire.

We then took our wee boy to Santa's grotto in our village and afterwards had a shufty around the charity stalls in the hall, one couple wsere selling a few magazines, (model rail) and books, among the books I find

The Hawker Hurricane

The Royal Air Force Museum Edition

Large hardback, lots of history a great spread showing most camo schemes, (and an all black night fighter scheme, I can see one of those on the build table sometime soon)

and

U-Boat

The Secret Menace

David Mason

Softcover but in great condition, lots of piccies and history.

The pair for £1.50

I very nearly bought the Mossie book that was there too but i've never been a massive Mossie fan and can't see me building one but i've been pondering a U-Boat for a few weeks too.

Needless to say I'm well chuffed, two Hurricanes and a U-Boat on the same day

Now if you had brought the mossy book as well, you could of sold it on here. I for one would of been up for it!!!!

Hope the other books are good. Bargin if there ever was one!!!

How about a mini review of those haynes manuals. Been tempted but I would like to know more before I comimit.

I'm 3/4 of the way through the Bf109 book and can say with all honesty i'd be as delighted had I paid twice the price.

It is truly excellent.

Bear in mind i'm basing this on an 'interesting read with some useful pics' basis.

For reference i'm not one to buy lots of ref related books but rather scour the internet as my interest is too varied for tha former option to be cheap.

They are hardback, (just like any Haynes manual you've seen), and as well as lots of lovely colour and B&W photo's are split into sections.

Along the lines of, (ref from the Hurricane book as it's in front of me)

Intro

the, (insert plane) story

restore to flight

anatomy of, (insert plane)

The, (select group)s, (select plane)

the owners views, (this covers flying, maintenance, personal opinions

the pilots views

the engineers views

appendices

index

about 175 pages in all, great cutaway on the cover as only Haynes can do and they are based on a restoration as their car manuals are based on a complete strip and rebuild

This is likely why theres not a massive selection so far.

Definitely worth every penny in my opinion and great stocking fillers for your santa list.

One of the most amazing Spitfire Books I have ever come across is:

The Spitfire V Manual, ISBN, 1-85367-545-8 from the RAF Museum series.

Quite an amazing book with a staggering level of detail and includes a huge number of photo's and engineering drawings. They also do a Hurricane one called The Hurricane II Manual.
