i think i mentioned ages ago that whilst i was in the ATC i was awarded with a Royal Marksmenship. (have always been prowd as i was the only one in the squadron with one)

Using a .22 single loading bolt action rifle we used to go "tin hat" target shooting about once every 2 months.anyway...if you managed to get all 5 rounds (thats how many you got at a time and took it in turns, two people shooting, 2 powder monkeys) anyway.....as i was saying. If you managed to get 5 rounds into the "bulls eye" area which had a diameter of 14mm (and we were shooting from 40 yards with no telescopic sights or anything) then you got the Royal Marksmenship.

I remember being so pleased and i have always wanted to take a picture of the badge but couldnt find it untill i realised i had stuck it on my cupboard :S woops.lol

anyway, enough blabbering...here is a pic of it :D

Richard, that is something to be very proud of and quite an achievement. Well done and thanks for sharing the picture with us.

Well done Richard!

I use to love rifle shooting too.

Not to steel your thunder as your badge is a great acheivment, I had a good first ever shoot on the range at basic training (Aus Army) . It was an un zeroed grouping test to see how you go and where to start your training level etc. My third group of 5 shots at the 25 metre target was a 20 mm group! The seco (corporal) took the target back the the baracks and hung it on the wall outside the troop commander's office. How embarrassing.:sadcry:

The last thing a new recruit needs!

I copped heaps from the others.

the ATC is the Air Training Corps, there is also one for the Navy and Army. Kind of a thing for youngsters (13+) to get involved, learn leadership, dissapline.

it was great fun, we used to go on all night navagational exercises, weekends on old RAF bases, shooting, gliding, flying, competitions..etc

unfortunatly i had to leave as my GSCE exams were putting too much pressure on me to attend every monday and friday night.

I also won the shield for Aircraft Regocnition three years in a row and got to Senior Cadet but unfortunatly never made it as an NCO (corpral) as some new guy came in a year after me and his family were close friends with our CO...so you can imagine he rushed through the ranks. Nobody liked him, he was childish, irrisponsable and had no leadership or teamwork skills what so ever. If it had have been the RAF i dont think he would have even made it past basic training!

anyway, enough blabbering and complaining.

it sounds like it is pretty mutch the same thing, they have Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force, i was in an Air Force unit, and my i made it all the way up to an E-8 witch is an senior master sergant, witch is second from the top, i had a promotion that went through for me to become an O-2 1st lutient, and i would have made it to the rank af O-3 captain but i got into some trouble and lost that promtion, but oh well.

i got to go to many Air Force bases and i have many pictures on 35mm that i could scan in and post if anybody would like to see them.

yea sure Taylor. post all of them! lol we have lots and lots of spare room in the gallery!

oh yea, hows your car comming along?

The Air Training Corps is a fine organisation, preparing young men ( and ladies these days ) for service in the Royal Air Force.

When at school I was a member of 8F ( Founder) squadron for a while, then I did some teaching as a civilian instructor for 84 Squadron covering Aircraft Recognition and Theory of flight.
