discussion Scharnhorst - Revell - 1:1200 scale Miniships Kit

Having completed the tiny Bismarck from the same Revell range, I am on to the other tiny ship I have in my stash, (the Scharnhorst) both from an auction haul of many varied kits).....

I made the Bismarck with no intention of painting it, but TBH I was so impressed with it once it was built, that I did end up painting it, but only after I had built it, so it was much trickier to paint!

So, with this one I shall be painting as I go along, made a start and already primed up the parts and assembled the hull.
Not many decals, only two small ones, one on each side of the hull at opposite ends.

So moved on a bit....
Some more painted and some more assembly....

The deck was a bit warped so a bit of filling was needed at either end once the deck was secured to the hull.
Slowly making progress....
This one (althought still 1:1200 scale) is actually a slightly smaller ship than the 1:1200 Bismarck I've just finished, so some of it is even fiddlier!

The hull camo pattern is a bit more complicated than the Bismarck (which used decals) so i will need to mask off the hull to get it right. Not done it yet...probably a job for tomorrow.

Just done a tiny bit of reading up on the Scharnhorst and she had Arado AR 196 float planes onboard, and merely by coincidence I have just finished an Arado AR 196 float plane in 1:72 scale kit.
I might have to do a side by side photo, one in 1:72 and one in 1:1200, so little and large, Lol...

So todays little update...
Added more structures to the deck, etc, cranes, life boats, tidied up the paint a bit more, etc...

Then added all the other final bits, eg: radar pods, smaller side guns, smaller cranes, couple of masts, bow and stern flag poles, the last couple of little life boats, the 2nd plane and catapult, etc.

So its basically all built now, just got to tidy up the paint a bit more and then camo the hull, so will need to mask up etc.

Masked up the hull and black section painted on.
There appears to be three colours, a light grey, a dark grey and an almost black(very dark grey), I went with flat black for the darkest shade.
Next step will be the mid grey shade.

Calling this one done now.
Completed the three tone camo on the hull, flat black, dark grey and light grey.
Then gave the whole thing a spray of Tamiya rattle can flat matt varnish.
Took a tiny bit more time and effort with this one, then the one I did earlier (Bismarck), so quite pleased with it, bearing in mind its tiny scale!

Pics, including obligatory scale shot with jar of paint and one on my hand, so you really get a sense of just how small these are.








This one will now be going on my "What If?" small diorama, putting this Scharnhorst alongside the Bismarck, even tho they did not actually sail together. So why am I putting them together, well, just because I can......
