hi everyone

just been wondering about semi gloss black and the fact it seems only tamiya produce this colour is there an alternative its ok to spray with but like most tamiya colours a bugger to paint with was thinking of trying satin black but not sure if it would look the same just wondered if any of you had found a successful replacement and would love to hear about it

Cant speak for brushing tamiya semi-gloss black ( have not brushed tamiya`s for a long time ) , but for airbrushing it I`ve had a few issues with it coming out patchy on large areas I now use vallejo air black which I find is between a flat black and a satin/semi gloss black , works for me .

Well in that case I can recommend that you use the Vallejo model color with a drop or two of gloss medium mixed in. It is a bit hit and miss so try it on a scrap bit first. Once you have found the right mix for you air brush. I normally go for around one third gloss medium two thirds paint. You can go to about 50/50 after that it starts getting to shiny.

Hi Meggsy. Revell make one in their Aqua Color range (Number 102) with what they call a seidenmatt finish. According to one translator I've seen on Google, that means either semi-gloss or semi-matt! You pays your money and you takes your pick.

I've used it with both hairy sticks and airbrushes with suitable thinning (I use ordinary tap water) and it works OK for me. Mind you, I'm no paint expert, but it appears to be less shiny than gloss and shinier than matt. How you see it and whether you would consider it to be a semi-gloss finish has to be down to you.

I do use Tamiya acrylics for airbrushing, but there not the best for brush painting, for this I use Revell Silk matt enamel,
