Hey all.

There's no scifi/mecha/anime forum so this seems to be the place. I'd like some comments or tips regarding washing and preshading. This was my first attempt and I had the following difficulties:

Keeping mixed paint- I preshaded with tamiya sky grey and then coated with flat white on this - but other than mixing up jars are there any top tricks for matching preshading on parts done over a few days? I'm using draw-feed airbrushes so mixing in the cup isn't so easy without the damn thing falling off...

Klear coat to seal decals (prior to wash) - how thick a coat should this be, ideally? I put a fairly light coat on and got some rubbing damage on the decals from handling over time...

Wow.......thats an impressive model. I didnt even realize they made models like that lol. The paint job looks great. I am sorry i cant help you with the future though, I use the testors dull cote and gloss cote and testors hi gloss spray laquer on my models.

But, that is a really good looking model you have there....well done!

Thanks. It's actually a 1/48 scale toy from a japanese company called Yamato. I'm not actually that fond of most of the transforming mech kits - they tend to have proportions geared towards one form. This particular toy's nice because it looks very good in all 3 modes, and has a hidden swing bar for the legs. And it paints up real purdy. I've just ordered another one...

It's a great looking model, the panel lines look really good, if you are having problems with the future - i'd recommend trying another thin coat - it's self levelling so you shouldn't really have a problem over doing it.

Add-on armour nearly done

Ok, got the add on armour decalled up and initial run of oil washes done. Still need to do paint chipping, some streaks and smoking, and a flat coat.

The spotlights in the legs are lit with a couple of 3.2cd white LEDs set behind the lens, which is silvered with silver leaf and Klear. Batteries are stored in the knees.

Any hints and tips on paint chipping techniques that would work at this stage would be appreciated.

hi winterdyne!! i can see you like macross!! like me .. me and a friend are working on a YF-21 in resin at the scale of 1/48 it should release somewhere in febuary. so if interested let me know.
