One thing concerning part-making:

This pic of an indented sheet of polystyrene (taken from your post) is for the front forks. It looks like you heated the sheet then used a tool shaped like the indentations, pressed into the softened plastic which was on a soft surface. Is that right please?


If so, when I once heated polystyrene sheet to soften it, it needed a temperature much higher than 100 degrees C (boiling water) which was difficult to achieve and to control without melting. How did you heat the sheet, and to what temperature, to soften it? I'd really like to know that so I can experiment.

First of all I want to thank you for your kind words. This model is not as easy, as I thought it would be. I am happy to see the end of this build coming soon. I did not expect painting black gloss is such a nightmare - it was a struggle. Anyway, your comments are uplifting and I hope to show some final pics pretty soon.


Stevekir, Initially I tried thermoforming, but look what happened:

So next try was without pre-heating, I used the tools I made as a press mould. Fenders' supports are embossed the same way (only fenders, driver seat and head light are thermoformed). I use PVC films of various thickness, but time ago I used youghurt and icecream cups.

I had not thought of PVC.


Does it have a lower softening temperature?


I have found a source of 1.5 mm thick sheets but they cost £33. Do you know of a hobby/crafft-type Source?

I have never measured the temperature in my thermoforming, but a hot air gun I purchased at Wilkinson shop is up the task. I don't know what part you need to do, but I suppose 1,5 mil would be too thick. I normally use 0,25 up to 0,5 mil thick PVC sheets.


I suggest you look around for plastic folders and document envelopes. They usually come in standard A4 size which should be enough for most modeling jobs.


I don't know the difference between PVC and styrene softening temperatures, but PVC is stretching more after heating up.

Hi,


During last couple of days I struggled with a base for my bike. I wanted it to match the period so I made concret slabs overgrown with grass.


First I made a master and silicone form:

Next I used tile glue to "cast" the concrete slabs:

Then I "planted" some grass made od some brushes and a piece of old string:

Hi,


I hereby present my finished model. Last weekend during Model Festival in Cracow it was awarded in category Civilian and racing vehicles. It was a very difficult model to build and I finished it thanks to support and cheer of my beloved wife. Several times I wanted to quit the build and start something else but fortunately my "better half" persuaded me not to do it. During the build I used some paints and mateirals for the first time. I'm sure new skills I got will improve my future builds.
