Just found this browsing the web.

May be worth watching.

This is the Spitfire that crashed on the beach during the Dunkirk Evacuations.

Sunday Night Channel 4

.

Gregg

,The pilot was Geoffrey Stephenson who had a remarkable career in the RAF, including post war.

The Spitfire was/is N3200 coded simply QV (no individual aircraft letter) when shot down.

N3200 took to the air for the first time, post restoration, on 26th March this year.

I shall definitely be watching this, or setting the box thingy to record it, not least because my next project is a very similar Mk.1, N3290. GR-U, of 92 Squadron. Both were built to the first Air Ministry contract for Spitfires, excluding the prototype.

Cheers

Steve

I watched the programme.

Guy Martin, top bloke. Spitfire Mk I, beautiful aeroplane. Channel 4's programme, rubbish.

How in this day and age with all we know about the Spitfire and the history of the period programmes like this get made is beyond me. I'm afraid I spent most of the programme imagining what a wonderful show could have been made of this story, but wasn't.

Cheers

Steve

I've recorded it on the box thingy I hope it's better than you say Steve.

Not sure that qualifies as a rebuild looked all new to me.Dave
It's a technicality Dave. It's called a frame 'whichever one the original data plate is attached to (and I can never remember)' rebuild. By retaining that original plate the aeroplane retains the identity of the original.

I've seen N3200 in the flesh and they did a beautiful job of it. It's a shame that the programme makers didn't do the same :)

Wasn't that 109 actually a 108? It looked kinda funny at the frontAdrian
It was a Buchon. From the fire wall back it's pretty much a Bf 109. From the fire wall forward it definitely isn't which is why the front looked funny to you. It actually has a Merlin engine!

The Merlin engine version was built in Spain in the mid '50s.

I'm afraid I find Guy Martin a bit over the top and definately does not seem to have the presentation skills for such a topic. Apart from the shots of the build, which were interesting to see the techniques used, it fell well short of what I was expecting.

Maybe I expect everyone to live up to Raymond Baxter's standards!!

Despite its faults I still enjoyed the program.I bet it was fun firing that .5 machine gun.Would have preferred to see a 20mm cannon in action though. Not even a mention of it!.

This practice was stopped with military vehicles years ago specially (restoration) land rovers to avoid tax. Not knocking the build a fantastic outcome but I'd like to have seen more on the construction side of things (even that vet bloke does a better job) but that's my interest.

I'll probably be shot for this being a Lincolnshire lad myself but I do find Guy Martin annoyingly OTT .

I was surprised though that when the real one crash landed that the Germans didn't take it away to study it.

Dave

He should stick to racing bikes. I really don't think his presentations skills lend themselves to serious TV documentaries!!

(......and I live in Lincolnshire!)

I echo all that has been said. A very disappointing programme an hour and a half with ads every five minutes, thank god for Tivo boxes. Why oh Why did they use Guy Martin as a presenter. For a start I couldn't understand what he was saying half the time and when I could it was of no importance anyway. When John Sergeant presented the programme about the Lancaster Bomber at least he was far more creditable.

It was still better than watching 'X factor,Britains got no talent,Towie or any of the multitude of shite programs that are on these days.

Yes, but, in all fairness, that isn't setting the bar very high Dave!!! :D
