discussion Suggestions for chrome needed

Ok so I am getting closer to the paint stage on the C-21 painting the white obviously won't be a problem.

The fun will start when it comes to doing all the leading edges on the wings, tail and engines. All the pictures I have looked at show them in a polished chrome. I have thought about using foil this would probably look good on the wings and tail but getting it smooth around the engines would be very difficult.

I know Humbrol do or at least used to do metal paints that can be buffed to a good shine.

I am sure these would be ok sprayed over acrylics and if not I hope someone tells me different.

I am also thinking of trying Alcad paints for the first time.

Does anyone have any other suggestions to this problem? all help gratefully received.

Mr. Metal Color by Mr. Hobby is quite good IMHO

Yes they still do and they are very good. As for being able to spray them over acrylic... Try it OFF MODEL just to be on the safe side. As long as the Acrylic has had time to dry AND cure I think you might be ok.

Alclad: Will give a perfect finish as long as the ground work is perfect. Some say spraying over humbrol gloss black is fine. I use alclads own black.

I would not advise using over acrylics as they are a Lacquer: a so called hot paint that will do nasty things to acrylics. Some times a while after you have done and are happy...

Have to agree with both above, I've used Alclads a lot and you do have to make sure everything is 100% smooth as any tiny imperfection will show. This week I started using Mr Hobby Metals and I have to say they are brilliant, you can airbrush straight from the bottle or brush paint them with no brush lines in your work, you can the buff them once dry to a very high standard of finish.

I tried Alclad High Shine Chrome but failed. The surface was spotty despite have a perfect black base (Alclad's own). I will need to do even more experimenting.

I don't have any issue with Alclad Chrome, did you use there Gloss black base? Spray at 10-15PSI from a distance of around 6-8 inches? Light thin coats building up the layers?

I've sprayed high gloss Alclads over Humbrol gloss black with no problems. It was at a time when there were well known problems with Alclad's own primer (it took weeks to dry).

The most important thing is to allow whatever primer you use plenty of time to dry and cure. I left my Humbrol base coat for at least four days.

I'd be very wary of spraying something as 'hot' as Alclad over an acrylic paint, but I've never done it and others may know better.
