hello all

for an up coming build of the Tardis, I was wounding what color blue should i use ?

any help would be great

Not much help but this may make sense to you, I took it from one of the many sites out there

"Well, this is official Tardis blue color. The BBC approved Tardis blue is actually Pantone 2955C".

Adrian

There you go then, there is an official paint for Dr Who's Tardis. I would have thought it would have been just plain old Police Blue.

Having done a little more digging it appears that it's actually a purple in real life when you see it and its just the TV images that make it blue according to several sources. The actual blue has changed over the years along with cosmetic changes like the Police sign on the front changing in size and the lettering on the sign, presently its black on white but it has been blue writing on a white background but even white on a black background,

So I guess it all depends on which era you wish to paint the old blue box :)

Adrian

I would go for deep Prussian blue then a dry brush of Prussian blue over the top to bring out the wood grain.

Oh and I think it was ment to be Oak wood

The first Dr Who was shown in the early sixties (1963 I think). The reason the Tardis looks like a police phone box is because it's camouflage system is broken. The Dr says something like 'it's chameleon circuit is broken'. It would be reasonable to assume that the Tardis was attempting to hide by replicating a contemporary, that is late fifties/early sixties, police box.

I'm not an expert on police boxes, but I'm certainly old enough to remember them. I was one of the small boys on the bus to school 'exterminating' all the girls and the conductress :) I don't remember them as being a very dark blue, more a mid blue, but memory is fallible.

Whether the BBC accurately matched the actual colour or went with one that looked good on the then rather primitive black and white television cameras would be another point to consider.

Cheers

I am pretty sure our local one was in fact black! I do know that it was very hand when it was chucking it down with rain. :-)

As the latest Dr Who is a Glaswegian why not paint it red like they sometimes were in the second city of the Empire?

I'll have you know Dr. Who comes from Gallifrey; Alex Salmond can try a land-grab for his country, but he can't have another planet to go with it.

Did they differ in colour between the various Constabularies?

The one above is something like I remember, maybe a bit too light, for the Oxfordshire Constabulary. Where's inspector Morse when you need him?

Cheers

You could be right, however this is an original Hull Constabulary Box from the 50's-60's.

Also posting the photo's tends to alter the shades somewhat!

I recall that Blue paint al a house painting gloss was real good a fading those days, Maybe they started out life a nice deep navy blue and faded over a couple of years to the plethora of blue colours we have seen. As for the red ones in Scotland? Rust?

Little info on our favourite blue box :)

The undisguised appearance of a Type 40 TARDIS' exterior is a silver-grey cylinder only slightly larger than a police box.

The Doctor attempts to repair the circuit in Logopolis and Attack of the Cybermen, but the successful transformation of the TARDIS into the shapes of a pipe organ, a painted Welsh dresser (much to the amusement of Perpurgilliam "Peri" Brown and the Sixth Doctor's annoyance) and an elaborate gateway in the latter serial was followed by a return to the police box shape.

Other TARDISes have appeared in the television series. The first was that of the Meddling Monk, another Time Lord, in the 1965 serial The Time Meddler. The Master had at least two TARDISes of his own,[49] each a more advanced model than the Doctor's. The chameleon circuits on these were fully functional, and his TARDISes have been seen in various forms, including a fully functional spacecraft, a Concorde aircraft, a grandfather clock, a computer, a fireplace, a Doric pillar,[50] a lorry, a statue (able to move and walk around), a laurel tree, and an iron maiden.

Also note that the chameleon circuit isn't actually broke but as River Song says, the Dr is just too stuck in his ways :)

Did you know the originonal police boxes that the tardis was based on were also made of concrete as well.

So Birmingham blue then, as the second city is :) Adrian
Birmingham may be England's second city but as the song Mother Glasgow goes Glasgow is the second city of the Empire. And blue is my favourite colour too!
