after some very helpfull measurements from tommy yesterday i built a bridge out of balsa modelled on the bastion 35 bridge.i was quite proud of myself.

i then realised it was totally pointless unless i use it for something, so i am building a dio specifically for the bridge. thought i would do a build log for it so you guys can laugh along. started with a bit of mdf and glued a lump of polystyrene to it( first lesson of the night learnt, superglue does not work on polystyrene, it melts fast and then makes your eyes water like mad from fumes, this i allready knew but still bloody did it) off we go withe pva. next i took a blow torch to the poly to make a valley .

i then sprayed with primer to get a better look at the terrain (second lesson learnt, wilkos primer dissolves polystyrene).anyway now covered the lot in a nice sloppy mortar mix with some randomly placed rocks to try and imitate a river bed. this is coming straight out of my head and will be building stuff as and when i make my mind up what is gonna be on it with no plans or real ideas yet.

here is where i am up to,need to let the mortar dry know.

Andrew looking great, neat that you wound up building the dio around a structure instead of a piece of equipment!

A fine looking dio Andrew, and thanks for the tip about wilkos primer. I use this stuff and now know not to use it on expanded polystyrene.

Tony.

i think this is what we call "A happy accident" Andy. The things that went wrong may well have worked in your favour.Looks great from where Im sat.

the bridge actually took about an hour and a half, glued together with small blobs of superglue which works really well on balsa.

not much progress today, made a box for the dio as i was sick off finding little balls of poly every where, dug through the sand and cement mortar to make a channel for my cobbled road to sit in. now the more observant people among you will say why didnt he put the cobbles down first and mortar around them.......good question. built the ramps onto the bridge and now waiting for everything to dry up properly before i start laying some coulor onto this thing. painted the cobbles and covered them in flory mud wash, which is why they look shiny and wierd.hope they look better when dry

i forgot to post on this sorry Andrew .......

a well tidy piece of scratch building, looks a really good basis for a detailed diorama mate.

I'd be chuffed if i'd produced that :)

thanks. still have not decided what going on it yet, but i am thinking of a few americans hiding under the bridge (possibly injured) whilst the germans cross unaware.
