..playtime is over, time to get on with my first model for 30 years.
Got my workspace sorted, tools in place including my brand spanking new Evo 2 in 1 Silverline fPC airbrush.
First though I decided to practise with the new airbrush over Saturday and Sunday. First I tried out the .4mm needle having heard that the .15mm one was prone to blockages. Also used Humbrol paints of which i have stocked up with. First off all the Evo was so much easier to get on with, colour changes easy and really nice results. Then the 0.15mm needle, no real problems there either, I found a slightly higher air pressure and thinner paint helped. On the subject of air pressure, I really recommend the fPC on the brush, as a novice I felt much more in control and it was easy to try out different air pressures and mixes. I kept the compressor on 30psi all the time and adjusted down with the fPC when I felt I needed to.
My last test with the 0.15mm needle was to compare the Humbrol paints with Vallejo Air.
I used some scrap plastic from my spares box that I still have after 30 years! Two identical armoured 'skirts' from an old Tamiya Chieftan tank kit.
I primed them and, with Humbrol, painted some pre-shading with black, put on a sand base coat and tried some camouflage mottling (in the style of my planned initial build)
I then did the same with Vallejo, my first use of them.
Wow - the Vallejo paints partnered with the Evo really was a revelation. I was amazed at the coverage of the paint, it went on so smoothly. The eye droppers made it so easy to measure out paint quantities too.
Well that's it - I am converted to Vallejo, goodbye Humbrol.
Monday, I made a good start of the 1:48 Airfix bf109 Trop and enjoyed every minute of it.
John - I will be sending in a big order for more Vallejo Air and Model Colour as well, plus a couple more simple 1:48 kits to get back into the swing before that big 1:32....
