discussion Transporting Models?

I've almost finished my Lancaster and now I need to think about getting it to and from shows, my other builds all fit into those "Really Useful Boxes" from Hobbycraft I can fit 6 1:48th fighters in each and the square ones I can get the slightly larger models in.

Anyway the Lancaster is too big to fit, eventually it will be going onto a diorama board with an RAF ground crew all around it, so I'm sure someone else has similar issues and I was wondering how you get around them?

Ive used Fyfes (other brands are available!!) banana boxes , obtained from Morrisons at the end of the tills. I dont know if a 1/72 lanc would need the wings poking out of the sides a bit , but theyre free so it wont cost anything to have a try. I used one to transport my 1/72 Tu 22 blinder to the cosford competition and had to have a cut out so the nose could stick out 3 inches but with a bit of polystyrene cut to form a supporting cradle ,it made it there and back in one piece (didnt win anything though -boo!) tony

Aye carumba!! thats a biggie! In that case the banana box wont be much use unless you could somehow stick 2 together? Sorry i couldnt be much use! cheers tony

I've always used “Really UsefulBoxes” but the largest models I've had to take to a show have been 1/48 twins.Having said that I've seen Ikea under bed storage boxes used for holding models (SMW on next table last year),I've just looked on the Ikea site and they produce a storage box 70x77x20cm which should be large enough at a pinch for a 1/48 Lancaster, height might be a problem depending on how you support the model even then it might still stand proud of the box.It's called Dilling now I don't know how suitable it would be regards strength and weight but at £8 it might be worth a punt.

Thanks Malcolm, I'll go take a look at the weekend, if need be I'll get two and make a set of supports to make a top.

Try going to your local general/DIY shop and get some free 1" thick expanded polystyrene sheets used for packaging fridges etc. that they throw out in huge quantities. Glue together with white glue, perhaps with scrap cloth glued on corners for strength. Make any size you want.
