An enjoyable build overall but the very large decals were a real problem, all the large ones splintered when trying to adjust position on the model no matter what I tried. It was the size combined with the complex shape making it impossible to move the whole decal in the same direction at the same time leading to it ‘bunching’ and/or splintering. I don’t know what the answer is to that problem. Most were pieced together but the large ones on the tail were not recoverable so I ended up cutting them down to just the black areas and then changing the position to avoid raised detail. Even then after piecing them together they need touching up with paint to get an acceptable but not perfect appearance. Add that to the kit inaccuracies, intake shape, tail detailing and panel lines we should just regard this as a ‘representation’ of the type and not a model of a real aircraft. It would have cost not far off £100 to sort the intake issue so I decided to live with the inaccuracies.

if you were to throw a lot of money and time at this kit and find a way to apply the decals in one piece (or at least a few pieces) you could get a great result from the kit So I would recommend it only with caution.

It is amazing how expanded photos taken with a flash expose flaws in the model not visible to the naked eye....

I must learn to take better pictures as well......

:thumb2: Turned out into a fine model Barry, even with the problems you experienced.
Very nice!

I was going to say: “I didn’t know George Michael flew Tomcats in his spare time” — and then I noticed the guy’s squadron mates had made much the same connection, going by the nickname underneath the canopy.

The model looks good. When you say that it’s not all that accurate, I think that’s mainly because you’ve done the research — to a non-Tomcat-expert like me, it looks fine :)

Looks very good Barry, in spite of all the problems.
Pete

That turned out well Barry. Your typical impeccable paint job. As others have said You only notice the faults as you have studied the aircraft for the build. I would be chuffed to have that good a result.

Hi there ...... not a huge fan of jets and stuff and I much prefer the propeller jobbies .... but i am definitely a fan of your work .... just outstanding!! Attention to detail is jaw dropping sometimes ..... :thumb2:

As soon as my commission build is done (I will post a completed pic and it won’t be long as it’s only a small scale 1/48). I will have two more 1/32 jets to build then back to WW2 prop aircraft... my preference too.
